Ended up putting in the albums I’ve most listened to as albums and probably favour a time in my life when I did that a lot.
Tough not to put in some classics and some albums where I’d listen to a few stand out tracks and could quite easily squeeze quite a few in that meet this same criteria but that’s the beauty of making lists.
And I’m willing to argue with anyone that Slayer is a better band than Metallica.
The argument that metalheads have been too scared to enter.
Mighty Joe Moon just missed my top 10. Really good stuff.
Dunno about others, but it would help me if you could add the artists’ names.
Oright:
Rubber Soul
Exile on Main St
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
=w= Blue Album
Definitely Maybe
Hourly Daily
Stone Roses
The La’s
Forever Changes
Up The Bracket
I would say it’s a given. They are streets ahead.
- Emperor- Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
- Devin Townsend/Ocean Machine- Biomech
- Agalloch- Ashes Against the Grain
- Grimes- Art Angels
- Mirrorthrone- Carriers of Dust
- Devin Townsend- Terria
- Depeche Mode- Violator
- Lykathea Aflame- Elvenfris
- Napalm Death- Smear Campaign
- Decapitated- Winds of Creation
Great Emperor album is Anthems.
For obvious reasons won’t get the appreciation it deserves outside of the metal community but it’s a brilliant album from start to finish. The way they compose the “wall of sound” by weaving guitar riffs throughout with classical elements is masterful songwriting.
I’m loving this update…been picking out albums to play that I’ve never heard before.
Currently listening to Dummy by Portishead (thanks @Jetster)
Will give Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk a go next @Sniggles

Thought some of you might be interested in this.
It’s a podcast of two guys who pick a band and review every album they put out. It’a pretty laid back, a few laughs etc., but as I have no musical capabilities, it’s interesting to hear someone describe and point out traits of certain bands be they good or bad.
They’ve covered some great bands, thanks I’ll give some episodes a listen.
Let us know what you think.
Like most US podcasts it gets shouty and lots “WHAT THE ■■■■?” “DUDE, NO WAY!!!” So it can be a bit hard to listen to.
It seems to work best when the like the band and explain some of the finer points.
Then again, they throw up a set list of the best tracks from a band, so you can dive right in if you are new to them.
Sometimes I am genuinely shocked!
I tried the Birthday Party and Mclusky eps. It’s not bad at all. In one way they have glaring holes in what they know when talking different bands in their discussion (Liars came up in chat - one guy didn’t know them, the other thought they were from the UK and were a “The” band from the early ‘00s like The Vines… sheesh), which both frustrates but also gives them a unique angle to come at stuff.
I mostly agreed with their analyses and picks though. And they do highlight songs and parts of songs that maybe you never focused on much and can then go listen to. I’ll definitely try more eps.
I think part of the problem is they’re reviewing bands that were around before them even being born.
Not being ageist BUUUUUT they ‘weren’t there’….
It’s ok for me, it identified a couple of albums from bands I’d somehow overlooked, so that’s nice.
I like the naivety going into things, so when they dropped names or things they clearly didn’t have much knowledge on it was a bit annoying. But I love how they’re discovering stuff, without being like those dopey YouTube reaction videos.
