I don’t own an album, not even a photo album.
You can’t play them on a turntable anyway, you’ll ■■■■ up the stylus and the photo.
(Unless it’s a photo disc… )
in order. no honorable mentions because i am not a coward
kanye west - my beautiful dark twisted fantasy
avalanches - since i left you
you am i - hi-fi way
cake - fashion nugget
hilltop hoods - the calling
fatboy slim - you’ve come a long way baby
led zeppelin iv
nas - illmatic
radiohead - the bends
blink 182 - dude ranch
Here’s my lot. These selections were made for both the musical content and for the “time capsuled” memories that they trigger in me. Another selection criteria, is number of revisits I’ve had with these after long layoffs, to then again immerse myself.
1984 - Van Halen. This album was my first exposure to the group, when Eddie met synth. The overall sound of drums, guitar & Roth’s lyrics is just so perfect here. I really wish this original line-up stuck around for at least one more album in the 80’s.
Purple Rain - Prince. When Doves Cry & Let’s Go Crazy first caught my attention, but the entire album is a gem. I quite enjoy the movie too. I was a HS student at the time and even for a few years prior, I couldn’t understand why Prince wasn’t attracting as much cred as Michael Jackson. I always thought Prince was better and musically more talented.
By The Way - RHCP. For me, this is peak Peppers and more so peak Frusciante. Blessed is Frusciante. This album was released during an unusually comfortable period in my adult life, where work life and play was balanced and made sense.
Achtung Baby - U2. I wasn’t a huge U2 fan before this came along. It was a different sound for them & I liked it. This album was U2 going toe to toe with INXS for world domination. I appreciate reinvention in artists and I found Macphisto showmanship ingenious. Life was again unusually good for me at the time, first real love, manhood and the like.
Help - The Beatles. I had a lot of exposure to the Beatles in my primary years and of course there’s a lot to like. If I had to choose one Beatles album then this is it. This is their last album of lighter fluffier material (minus the title track) before the serious drugs and introspection kicked in.
10 to 1 - Midnight Oil. This was the first album I ever heard where every track blew me away. I remember sitting with friends in HS and an adjacent group played it on their boombox. I had no idea who they were and by 3/4 through the album, my friends and I were stunned. We were giggling in amazement at the constant quality and on point message that was being beamed across the room. Being a HS student listening to the Oils and reading 1984 in the year 1984 sealed my fate for the rest of my life.
Kick - INXS. I had been a mild fan of the lads in previous years. I was at my first real job and my manager at the time was originally from NSW. He told me “out of the blue” he had listened to their yet unreleased album (via unnamed contacts) and that according to him, it was going to be huge. This guy had my full trust so I had no reason to doubt. I absolutely loved the album and was thrilled for their global success. On the flip side, I was devastated by Michael’s unexpected passing and I couldn’t listen to any of their music for a good decade or so.
Slippery When Wet - Bon Jovi. This album was a force on radio when released. It was everywhere. This album coincided with my first job, first car and many other firsts. At the time, the world was my oyster and it was a great feeling. I was very naive.
Dizzy up the Girl - Goo Goo Dolls. I found this album while working OS. I was familiar with their big hit “Iris” and bought the album on a whim. This is one of my favourite types of albums that doesn’t initially grab you, but after a 2nd or 3rd listen, you’re hooked. This album and my final album choice coincided with the end of a very turbulent period in my life, and the beginning of many small steps leading to a hopeful future.
The Gold Experience - Prince. A long time fan by the time I heard this. Yet another reinvention by the Purple one. This is a concept album that takes a little adjusting to, but again hooks the listener in. Very audacious and adult at times.
Well, that’s my 10. I’ll enjoy reading my fellow Blitzer lists.
I must say that in the modern techno age, I have listen to a lot less music because of other distractions, and that I must return to my more cherished pastime.
I’m enjoying reading this thread about great albums different people like. But wow how completely impossible is it to put them in order?
I quite like Dave Mustaine and would be really tempted to include Megadeth.
Just reckon Slayer and Megadeth are a touch more fun than Metallica. (But it’s Metallica too. So many classics)
Is this list supposed to be:
- Albums that I listen to? Or
- Albums that have been important to me?
These would be quite different lists …
It’s however you choose to interpret it I reckon!
10 Grace - Jeff Buckley
9 Paranoid - Black Sabbath
8 Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not - Arctic Monkeys
7 Master of Puppets - Metallica
6 Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
5 The Living End - The Living End
4 Appetite For Destruction - Guns N Roses
3 Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden
2 IV - Led Zeppelin
1 Ten - Pearl Jam
Astral Weeks is still right up there on mine. Been there since about 1971. I know the album is older than that, but that’s about when I really got into it.
10 - Mastodon - Crack the Skye
9 - Opeth - Blackwater Park
8 - Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
7 - Pink Floyd - The Wall
6 - Faith No More - Angel Dust
5 - Pearl Jam - Ten
4 - Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
3 - Megadeth - Rust in Peace
2 - Tool - Lateralus
1 - Metallica - Master of Puppets
Surely SCIENCE is the quintessential Incubus album! I love Make Yourself, but SCIENCE just rules.
1984… Girl gone bad a great deep cut.
Opeth - Blackwater Park is a masterpiece
Master of puppets- Metallica
1984 - Van Halen
Kiss Alive 2 - Kiss
Back in Black - AC/DC
Live line - The Angels
Appetite for destruction - Gunners
Enema of the state - Blink-182
Black Sunday - Cypress Hill
Smash - The Offspring
The Predator - Ice Cube
It’s incredible.

We should give it a go Jez.
I’ve actually been stewing over this the past few days. Making a top 20 playlist, then adjusting, listening again while I work. Got 6 or 7 absolute faves locked in and the rest seem to change each day . A bit self-indulgent and off-topic to post in here but heaps of fun to think about.
i’m 70% confident i could guess everyone’s age based on their top 10 list
With everyone north of 40
Here we go.
This was really hard, a top 50 could be the go. Tried to choose albums that have had a solid run at different stages of life. Could categorize it with huge global albums, or local albums etc.etc.
Nirvana - Nevermind
Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed
Led Zep - IV
Neil Young - Harvest
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
Sepultura - Beneath The Remains
Doors - LA Woman
SIA - Colour the small one
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Rufus Du Sol - Bloom
