Captain of the rehab group.

Some seem to think our $800k/yr AA defender is going to get to play 3rd tall on the 3rd best forwards and come in to help out other keys playing on main forwards.

He won’t be. He gets the best fwd. Why?

Because most of the play gets directed to the best forward of which he can then beat and launch attacks from. If playing on 3rd best they just drag him out of the play, and have nothing to worry about from Ambrose in an attacking sense.

Of the top sides for next year as an example we’d need to cover, with likely match ups.

WB: Cloke, Boyd, Crameri

  • Hurley, Hartley, Ambrose

Syd: Buddy, Tippett, Reid

  • Hurley, Hartley, Brown

GWS: Cameron, Patton, Lobb

  • Hurley, Hartley, Brown

ADE: Walker, Jenkins, Lynch

  • Hurley, Hartley, Ambrose

Certainly could go either way as third tall for Brown/Ambrose relative to match ups/weather.

But Hurley & Hartley a given.

You’re making out like playing your best defender on a weaker opponent is some sort of new novel idea.

Unless said defender is just a pure stopper, it’s what every single coach tries to do.

Fletch did it. Scarlett did it. Harry Taylor does it these days. Hell, even Rance does it sometimes, despite the fact Richmond have no other defenders.

If you can get away with putting Hartley /Ambrose on the best forward and allow Hurley to play more of a loose attacking role, then why wouldn’t you?

Because Hurley already plays an attacking game, even when minding the best forwards, therefore allowing a 3rd tall to also play an attacking role. Which is the reason I’d have Francis and Brown well ahead of Ambrose for that spot in the 22.

Unless you know the roles players are given in each game its difficult to interpret their performance.

It appears that both Hartley ( especially) and Ambrose were mostly given negating roles and specifically not given license to zone off or play the outlet player or sweeper roles that Dea , Baguley, Zac and Kel were given. Even so, perceptions that Hartley was far superior to Ambrose are not born out by stats such as contested marks, contested possessions, rebound 50s and Inside 50s . Hartley often had to play a very negative role on the no 1 forward in the goal square, and did this very well with huge 1% stats and almost totally sacrificed his attacking game.

But in looking at the attacking performance of Ambrose, he sometimes enjoyed the luxury of playing on weak high half forward opponents such as Liam Jones , and in these cases was taken further upfield. In some of these cases his creative handball and especially diagonal kicks to the fat side opened up excellent attacking opportunities while still nullifying his opponent. Ambrose was 10th in the Crichton in 2016

Now to the question of Francis and Brown in preference to Ambrose. I agree these 2 players are better intercept marking players than Ambrose with Brown being more mobile than Francis at this point. This pre-season Ambrose will need to further develop his intercepting / attacking skills and ability to work in a team / zone defence structure if he is going to retain his position in the side . Absolutely no doubt Hartley will continue to take on the no 1 key-tall forward in a predominately negating role but in the new defense structure will surely be given more freedom to zone off and intercept when in good position to do so.

However my comment was not with regards to the role they played last year. It is with regards to the attributes each player does and does not have. Even if Ambrose improves his intercept marking, I don’t see his potential on the rebound to ever be particularly damaging.

Ambrose’s role is not as an intercept player - Other players will perform that role.

I never said he was. Way to read a conversation.

At this point can even Woosha say with any certainty what every players role will be in 2017 and what their role will be each week ? Doesnt this all depend on his 2017 game plan which in turn depends to some extent on the strengths and weaknesses of the best 22 he has pencilled in at this point?

Will Francis play forward or back ? Will Francis even play round 1 in the AFL?
Will Ambrose play the shutdown role of 2016 in the AFL, or be sent back to the VFL to learn to play in a zone defence, and thus become an AFL depth defender?
Will Stanton, Myers or Jerret move into the AFL defence, play in their historical roles or become depth players ?

Its a new season and there are about 20 changes to the list we have sort out over the next 5-8 weeks.

John Ralph is back at work. This one of his predictions:
ā€œā€¦
11| Francis and McGrath will one-two NAB AFL Rising Star
ā€œAaron Francis will win the Rising Star in 2017 from Andrew McGrath. They will go one and two.ā€
ā€¦ā€

Sure. Francis is potentially a superstar, see me sitting in a front row seat on his bandwagon ? But he has to get a game in the AFL team first.

No need to rush Franga, He’s a big part of our next premiership tilt, Get him right at his own pace.

We have something really special here with him, Gonna be sweet watching him for the next decade.

How’s his fitness going? Any chance he’ll be fit enough to play round 1?

Based on likely match-ups and who we get selected to play in round-1… of 2018. He’s an outside chance.

18 Michael Hurley 193 95 10 Aaron Francis 194 94

If, and that’s a big if.
If, Essendon’s updated height and weight listed for Francis are correct, aside from aerial/marking ability in the positive to Francis, anyone willing to compare the pair based on what little we’ve seen of Francis as opposed to Hurley. Could we hope?

And yes, for a little while there… it was the hairy face look-a-like thing happening. Anything else?

Pretty sure CJohns said late last year that he’s 194 now and that came from his family (possibly Mother). Scooter is pretty close to the family I think.

Yes I have got to know Aaron;s mum well over the year as she sent me a message of thanks for sponsoring him through our Facebook group. Since then we have talked back and forth and she is a great woman and friend. She mentioned they did themselves a height check and it was in her own words 193 and 3/4  He still is behind the group in fitness and needs another big 6 weeks coming up to get to the level team requires (lost 4-5 kilos however). Needs to worlk on his disposal as he can get lazy with disposal and sometimes decision making. So still a way to go but boy his strengths are elite.

Imagine that , a second year player who doesn’t have elite disposal by foot, and some doubtful decision making.

Show me a second year player who didn’t have those sort of issues.

Tippa and Parish haven’t played a game in their second year and I’m not sure I’d quite classify Raz as an elite kick.

not sure it makes a difference if they are first or second year players, and im talking field kicking but feel free to scratch raz off that list if you wish, but i think his field kicking is quite good

His kicking’s fine, but it doesn’t make you go ā€œwow, what an amazing kickā€.

Walla is a long way from a second year player. A few years on the VFL list puts him way beyond year two in skills development.

Jaeger O’Meara

I’ll be really happy if he shows some improvement from last year. I really think he’ll take some time but will be fantastic in time.

I hope people give him more slack than Joe has had.

The are a few glimpses of him in training footage available today

Yeah, nah that won’t happen.
