#10 Isaac Kako

He’s been in our academy for years. I think we all know the answer to this!

I can literally hear it in his voice!

Yeah maybe or it just slides down to the next round.

Ie. round 1. If it gets to our first and the NGA hasnt been selected. We can select someone else.

If after taking our first he’s immediately bid on - well then we can use a second round to match for him. But it must be a second.(and later third/fourth round picks for points).

The point is to stop trading down and collecting a bounty of rubbish picks to select a gun player.

I think your suggestion though is a bit restrictive. It puts a club at the mercy of other clubs with the following X number of picks after he is bid on.

Every club is given a 1st/2nd/3rd round draft pick.

Yeah I’ll admit my initial thinking was that “X” was going to be 18, so almost guaranteed a club would have had another chance anyway (or at least an easier time trading into it).

The compromise you listed works (and tbh is pretty similar to the old bid/matching system, though slightly less restrictive whilst also forcing clubs to pay additional picks where required). Looks good.

The problem is more matching with a heap of junk picks than the discount IMO.

Happy to get a highly rated player of a type we want, but good grief the AFL needs to get their ■■■■ together. As it stands right now, if clubs are doing their intro nights for new NGA kids, they’ve got absolutely no idea what the rules will be when those kids are draft eligible.

Decide on the rules, and lock them in for a set period of time, and flag changes long enough ahead of time (several years at least) to let clubs choose how much it’s worth investing into their academies.

What ever bidding changes come in it needs to be league wide teams like gc,gws etc shouldnt be exempt where they can match with a bunch of crap picks

Well id imagine as a young bloke being selected to be in academy would be brilliant enough. A chance at becoming an afl player.

Its farkin tough to just get selected going from my nephews experience(he missed out on swans/giants selection, but his clubs best got in)

Mind you thats your normal whitebread northern academies.

The issue is just access.

If all the academies are funded by the afl anyway im not sure why clubs get so precious about talent being horded one way or another other than they have an incentive to give them the best football education possible with senior AFL footballers.

Maybe give other incentives to clubs if their NGA talent is drafted by anyone.

Eg if an Essendon NGA talent is drafted just reward Essendon with another draft pick? Could be in a subsequent draft.

Then noone is up in arms about access to talent and clubs get something back.

So no protectionism on academies just rewards(draft pick carrots) for developing good players.

I don’t have strong opinions on what the rules should be, they can really be anything, just as long as they’re consistent over time.

If a club is going to put time and effort into developing talent then they should know, at the time they make that decision, what the potential outcomes are. If the rule when a player gets added to the NGA is “no bid matching in the top 40” then that should be the rule when they reach draftable age.

When Isaac Kako was 14 the rule was any bid can be matched, when he was 15 the rule was only bids in the top 20, when he was 16 and 17 the rule was only bids in the top 40, now in his draft year it looks likely the rule is any bids can be matched. How is Essendon supposed to make sensible decisions about how much time, effort and money to put into their academy program in that environment?

To be fair, maybe in Round 1 there is no discount; Round 2 there is a 10% discount, Round 3 & beyond there is a 25% discount.

In this case Kako might be full odds or 10% off. :crossed_fingers:

Fair comment. It’s a free agency deal so no draft picks wasted. It’s effectively a like for like on more or less the same salary.

Zurhaar is a decent player who may just be stale at North. I reckon he’s worth a three year contract on $650k

I like the idea of this forward line

Gresham. Caddy. Zurhaar
Kako. Langford. Ainsworth

In reserve, Wright, Davey Twins, Jones,

Trade Bait

Guelfi, Stringer, Menzie, Perkins

There’s no chance in hell Zurhaar moves for a 3 year 650k deal.

I’d imagine it’s going to be 5 years at 750-800. Is he worth that? I’d say no, but free agents always attract a bit more.
