#11 - Jade Gresham

Strange complaints in here i reckon he has been good the last couple of weeks.

Can see it both ways. Agree he has been good, for him, recently. But good for him, realistically is not good enough for us.

We don’t have the players to replace him rn. We’ll move past him soon enough. But that performance will do for now.

Classic Essendon fan thread.

He is just a very selfish footballer.

His insistence to run around the man on the mark and spray his shot wide when 45 out instead of finding a better option will be the death of me.

We don’t get that many shots on goal usually so I’m alright with the forwards being selfish in that case, rather than just turning it over or bombing it to a big pack

Just needs to quicker in mind and body, but isn’t there talk he wants out anyway?

I stand by it.

ruptured Achilles a few years ago (against us I think) and that had slowed him down. That’s why he isn’t very evasive and doesn’t break tackles.
He fights hard tackles well and creates ball ups in our forward half,
Doesn’t shirk issues.
He is often involved in scoring chains
Not a natural goal sneak or dangerous around goal
Has kicked one goal per game and could well play 200 games before retiring (33 to go). Not many players do that.
Average skills

Deserves to be on our list but is not in our top 15 players.

The contract he is on isn’t his fault. I would have taken Essendons over the odds offer also. As did McKay

Certainly doesn’t deserve the vitriol he receives in here.

Spot on if any other small forward such as guelfi or Hobbs or whoever had a game where they have 20 touches 2 goals 4 tackles five score involvements and one goal assist they would be busting a nut over it.
I honestly think it’s because he was brought in from another club, we did it with McKay it’s just a weird Essendon thing

Still lacked the 1%s as shown of the Agenda Setters.

He’s got a bit of ability, and he’s played some good footy so far in his time with us. But he’s selfish and is terrible defensively. We’re really not in a position to carry too many players like this, and the combination of Gresham, Perkins, Hobbs and Wright (who has been terrific this season) in the forwardline is ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  horrendous. At least one of those players has to go, probably two. Gresham is currently ahead of Hobbs and Perkins as a forward option, in my opinion, but there are parts of his game he desperately needs to improve.

We were spoiled in the past with the likes of Tipingwuti, Fantasia and Dev Smith, so naturally some become critical.

For mine, he’s not one I’d single out honestly. He’s inconsistent and not as damaging as the aforementioned, but we also don’t have the luxury of replacing him.

Nothing else we can really do, say or expect.

Agree. A poor combination of players can make you look bad. If we had a forward line of two talls, say Wright and Caddy, two mediums with aerial presence, a rarity, say Langford in form and a Perkins who was twice as good as he is now, then Gresh might get more of a look in.

Good teams have at least four forwards with aerial presence - can take a contested mark or at least bring it to ground - we have two.

Injuries are not helping, but Gresham in our current forward set up is not working.
I would rather see five forwards who can take a grab and one small, Gresham or Kako.
Unfortunately the don’t have the cattle atm.

Perkins underwhelms and is still twice the player Gresham is.

Is he really selfish though he is currently sixth for goal assists in the team and last year was number 1 for goal assist

It’s not just about what he does near goal. He often tries unsuccessfully to break a tackle and do something flashy instead of just giving off the easy release handball to a teammate in space. Perkins has had the same problem, but seems to have improved a bit.

I don’t know I think you’re moving the goal posts there. His job as a small is kick goals create goals and keep the ball in and he does those things reasonably well.
The criticism of takes too much on applies to every player in our side

Thats clearly the point of contention .

Each week he plays a game of two halves. One is terrible the other is pretty good
