Oops, talking about something else.

So tell me, do you notice the difference? Asking for a friend.

It does sound like that. I thought the same initially.

Actually sesamoiditis, which is a much better result. He’d be in a boot, and not running at all if he had a hot spot.

Exactly. I’m incredibly bullish about Cox on the wing.

IMO top wingers are pretty rare. Melbourne and Bulldogs have two between them. I look at the characteristics that the best wingers have. A huge tank is mandatory with the accompanying work rate. But the best ones then have either speed, marking, or disposal. And you can’t be particularly weak in any of those areas.

Cox has the tank. He also is absolutely elite in both the marking and disposal. And he’s fine speed wise. His capacity to out mark his opponent, or provide another tall option drifting into attack or defence will be hard to counter. When he gets on the wing he’ll be able to deliver beautifully by foot.

Short of giving him Usain Bolt’s speed, he’s the exact schematics you’d create when designing an elite winger.

the biggest and funniest conundrum of next season, him and perkins were 2 out of 3 main reasons people rated this season( jones being the 3rd), the ā€œhypeā€ about how awesome they will be and how in 3 odd years they will be A graders and we will be contending for a flag.

Ironically if all things are equal and no injuries most likely those 2 are starting the year in the reserves, because you know OMG shiel is just so awesome and will definitely improve the midfield
and you gotta fit tippa and langford back into the side also, and well i mean caldwall with with 4 qtrs across 2-3 weeks after missing 20 odd weeks kept him out of a finals birth, so um yeah, where does he play, windy hill by the looks of it.

Reckon Cox is also very good when the ball comes to ground and has the *flexibility and smarts to pick up the loose ball.

I worry some of our fellow posters are always extremely negative and may need a hug.

Very excited to see what Nik Cox can build upon this season and next. We easily forget how special the first 10 games of his career was…like nothing we’ve ever seen.

He should improve further this season, probably more consistency over a full season. But by 3rd and 4th year I think we’ll see a very unique and very influential wing/utility taking marks all over the ground. Then using his 60 metre dual sided kicks to play on and launch attacks from all parts of the ground.

hmmm… really? I guess it depends on your definition of ā€œweā€ and ā€œseenā€. And if ā€œeverā€ means the last 5 years.

Ok, who have you seen that is like Cox?

You were talking about ā€œspecial 10 gamesā€ā€¦ John Coleman and Paul Salmon both set the footy world on fire in their first 10 games. In a way that would be unimaginable today - especially for JC, who was quite possibly the best player ever.

There would be more who others may like to nominate. In comparison, Cox does not even reach Jack Dyer’s definition of a ā€œgood ordinaryā€ player. (I know nearly everyone here does not know what that is, despite many posts on the subject). But Cox may have the 10 game rookie equivalent of Jack’s GOP.

He didn’t say they were as ā€œgoodā€ a first 10 games there has ever been.

He said we haven’t seen anything like it… as in, have not seen a 200cm wing, 18yo, with elite running capacity, dual sided, good at ground level, etc.

He is just saying he is unique, and could be anything. Which is fair.

Yep spot on Heppelltitis. Obviously nobody thinks he had 10 games even remotely close to the likes of Coleman.

Still can’t believe how many people are leaving Cox out of their Best 22.
Yes, he got tired towards the end of the season. And went back to modified training just before Christmas so watchers haven’t seen as much of him as others.
Still no excuse for forgetting just what a prospect he appears.
20 games in his first season- when was the last time an Essendon tall managed that?
Can kick. Can mark both in the forward line & at CHB. Runs all day. Elusive in traffic with clean hands and some excellent decision making.
Oh, and can be thrown into the ruck late in games & perform creditably. Even 1st year ruckmen rarely get asked to do that.

I get that people might struggle to figure out exactly where to name him on the field.
But also forgetting that he, and Perkins, essentially lost a year of football development in 2020.
On the other hand, I agree with Trucks comments that it’s vital to get these young potential stars to 50 games as quickly as possibly.
And we’re not going to do that with Cox by playing him as the sub, or relying on injuries to get him another dozen games in 2022.

You know we keep hearing that Cox could be anything. So, how are we going to know what that "anything " is ?

So maybe we should send him down to the VFL for a stint to build up his skills as a key forward/ high half forward, or give him a run as an inside mid at that level, then move him back into AFL level.

The alternative is to keep on using him as a wingman. He is great at that, but could he be even better than that?

He’s hard to pigeon hole.

I think he benefits a lot from a good pre season. Really tailed off - badly - in 2021.

cox/perkins/Smith/guelfi/durham/Hobbs will be the last couple selected in the side next year. there’s probably room for 3 at a guess. it’ll just come down to form at the time, and injuries. all of them will probably play a bit
