A mate of mine compared him to Grimes from Richmond today.
Said he has the ability to play on a range of different sized forwards.
I thought it was a good comparison. Obviously not that good⦠yet.

Lav is his own unique defender himself. Not many have his ability in the air and courage to take front position, run with the flight of ball into the contest but Grimes has been one of those underrated defenders in a very good system. If he played at Melbourne he wouldβve gotten thrown out the door before he got 10 games.
I said last week Laverde wants to be the best player he can be and has always taken his footy seriously. I great people person in Rutten has given him the confidence to go out there and show what he has got.

I wouldnβt compare him to grimes specifically, but Lav is a very βRichmondβ style defender, their system is kind of built around versatile 3rd talls with grimes, broad, macintosh, even Rance and balta are close to being 3rd talls with their ability to play small
And I canβt wait to see how we fit 2MP and Langford into our backline when they are also inevitably transformed into defenders
Really proud of Lav. As frustrated as weβve all been with him with his constant injuries etc, you can only imagine how frustrated he was himself. So to see him starting to flourish in a new role at this stage in his career is awesome, and a testament to him & his commitment and work ethic. Playing 6 consecutive games is also a huge tick. Hopefully his body has fully matured & heβs beyond any injury niggles. If he plays every week who knows where he will be form wise, by seasons end.

I also wonder how Giansiracusa (our backline coach?) has been shaped by his time at WBβ¦because they are a team that long featured βundersizedβ defenders.
lav has always been a great reader of the ball and contested mark, itβs just now the ball is being kicked to him straight
Heβs never had this sort of delivery playing fwd for us
