Hardly running out of time.
It was a dud draft year, but he’s still second on the most games played list.
The issue is - he isn’t a star and even been passed by Durham, Martin.
But he is still capable of very good games or turning it on for a quarter or half.
Our depth isn’t that great, so imagine he will still regularly get games this year.
He’s still only 23 - get him to 100 games and then we will start to see more consistency.
To me he’s running out of time in that you don’t typically see any sort of dramatic improvement from players as they reach 100 games. Once you hit this sort of range the player is what the player is. Maybe there are examples of guys who seriously improved in the 100+ experience range, but I’d say most guys develop in their first 50-60, and then tidy up their games after that, but are fully formed players.
I don’t mind if he doesn’t become a superstar, but if he wants to be a reliable and consistent highly regarded footballer the time is now.
It’s no surprise Sydney and Geelong, the two teams who have managed to maintain a high standard over a long period of time, got the best two value players in Gulden and Holmes.
Thilthorpe is pretty important for Crows now.
I like Braeden Campbell too hes a bit of a livewire, been a slow burn for him though finally getting consistent games
I watched Thilthorpe this week and last, having previously not noticed him at all. He is a very good forward. Didn’t SA play footy during Covid that year?
Thilthorpe was pick 2. Crows would want him to be good. Holmes was pick 20 and Gulden pick 32. Yes Gulden was an academy pick, but no one thought he was good enough to bid on until Geelong did at 32. Again Geelong have shown they are better judge of football talent than most.
If you have a read of this article prior to 2020 draft there were a majority of clubs that would have made big errors in their recruiting. DGB was touted by upwards of 5 clubs as being the genuine No 1 in the class. Some felt Logan McDonald, Elijah Hollands and Rylie Tilthorpe were next best. But from memory those that liked Tilthorpe were also very concerned about his SA go home factor.
5 years on he finally looks to be the pick of the lot but it has been a very slow burn. With, followed by Fogarty it has allowed Adelaide to be patient. I wouldn’t be giving up on our 3 lads just yet but admittedly they are heading towards a bust (or at least the ave AFL footballer).
I see you had a big think about that conclusion lol …
Lets see how he rolls here on end this year is my take.
I def think his go is as a lazy hff most comfortable dropping into space and kicking goals. Sure, he should work higher up and defend more but its not his strength. But he converts well so I’d like to see the mids feed him and let him score goals, pushing back his oppo into minding him. We need more goals given Stringer is offski and THE, 2MP, Guelfi and Ted are all injured too.
I’ve not given up on Archie but yep, he has to basically hit the scoreboard way more this season to make his case.
