#16 “OMG it’s Archie” Perkins (Part 1)

A trade scenario that could work would be Perkins for Mitch Lewis.

The Hawks would value his attributes, and his last 3 games against them have been good-very good.

Lewis is a risk injury wise, though the upside and need for us is clear.
If the Hawks land Allen, I could see them letting Lewis go.

Would Archie work off half back?

An Archie off half back is safest
But that’s not Archies are made for.

They tried it towards the ends of last season, he was just as bad there

It’s purely a workrate thing with Perkins. If he works hard enough on field to run, chase and give 2nd efforts. He will become a good player.

He has to change his whole mindset, I just can’t see it happening

Agree.

I’m sure everyone here also agrees McKay is our best kick

His draft profile was a knock on his disposal.

He looked like a big bodied clearance mid with an ability to hit the goals.

To me a lack of exposed form over covid and his original draft range mid to late first range. Maybe he was always a late round pick.

If I was so bored I’d look up disposal efficiency of that draft and where they all are now. I wonder if it’s low.

Ie Covid made it hard to pick the talent, I wonder if talent was there. 2020 is a really average draft with a few exceptions(Gulden, Thilthorpe, Phillips might be a player)

Noted only Geelong bid on Gulden. And he slid. Says something about the cats.

Perkins disposal is his biggest attribute. Normally a very good user of the ball. Good mark too

Really? From RookieMeCentral:

An aggressive type with ball in hand, not only does Perkins look to immediately force space in front of him, but he also makes good decisions via foot. 65 per cent of his average 14.2 disposals come in the form of kicks, with Perkins adept at hitting targets and gaining good meterage when either option presents. His willingness to immediately move the ball on is made easier by his athletic acumen, and lends to a high amount of impact.

When not putting the ball into dangerous areas for his teammates, Perkins can also find avenues to goal himself.

From that page I took this:

As meaning a knock on his kicking. He hasn’t been used as a distributor yet has he? To be honest he’s struggled for a kick in recent times it’s hard to know where his strengths with the pill lie.

Or finishing equals hitting the goals.

Read below and they say the knock is about his goal accuracy.

Before this year, you could say that was a key weakness for Merrett

Explosiveness?

Hes the least explosive player on our list.

He was explosive in his first year. And strong through the hips.

No idea what has happened to him since

Ive never associated explosive with Perkins at any point of his career.

Stringer is what you call explosive.

Yep Perkins just plods around

Some highlights from his first year.

I’ll agree he’s not the player he was. Maybe they’ve put too much weight on him

Smashed the Crows, well infront of them from a list build perspective, that’s a little different today.

Todd Goldstein says hi

The notion that Perkins is explosive and powerful is misleading. He’s good at wrong footing opponents to break away but his burst speed and acceleration is very average and is the big thing holding him back at the top level imo.

I think he’s strong over the ball and in a contest but he’s not very confident below his knees so he’s very reluctant to ball hunt in congestion

Stringer has genuine explosive power and speed. Perkins just doesn’t.

The problem with Perkins is he could be a very good afl player but at the moment looks more happy to just be an afl player and receive the off field benefits of that.
If he ever gets serious and puts the work into the parts of his games that need it he could be a player, I guess you could say that about half of our list all have some level of talent but probably don’t have the work ethic to get it out of themselves.
