#16 “OMG it’s Archie” Perkins

Probably comes with the move to the midfield

Its because he is playing inside mid/tagging role most weeks.
Doesnt have the time or space to use his skills to advantage.

Is it just me, or does it always looks like he’s really slow.

Not like some players who seem to get time and space. Perkins just looks really farkin slow when he’s got the ball, and can only find space by breaking a tackle.

And he might be decent for I50 but I’m sure there’s been his fair share of dumping it high and long like everyone else.

Or play him forward where he belongs and play one of the actual 4 mids who are in the VFL.

Much the same was said of Petracca in the early years of his career, noting he didn’t have to contend with covid interrupted development either. I’'m not worried about Archie, it will come.

He’s actually been starting less and less at the CBA since his return from injury.
After his first month of footy, it was a given that he’d have a few setback through the year. That is part of his development and learning.

It’s pretty clear that Merrett and Durham are first choice midfielders. Then Caldwell and Perkins sit on the next tier. Stringer gets the odd run in there depending on the matchup.

It’ll be interesting to see how they split Caldwell and Perkins when Parish gets back in. So far this year, it’s been Caldwell pushed back into another role to allow Parish some time in the middle.

I don’t think playing Perkins in the forward line is the way to go. We are already compromising that forward line with a glut of tall to mid players. We have 2MP, Jones, Langford and Stringer there more often than not. Add in Draper as a resting ruck and that leaves 1 or 2 spots as the small forward which most teams run 3 or 4. And we still want to add Caddy in there (preferably in place of Stringer) over the coming few years.

We’ve really only got a bench spot and giving a chop out for the other wing as positions to move players into when not in the midfield.

What I don’t understand about the general collective in here.

We almost universally agree that our I50’s are crapola and we don’t have enough foot skills in the side, then we suggest dropping someone who can actually kick the thing for players that couldn’t hit the side of a barn.

Now I don’t mind bringing in Hobbs and even had him as an IN against Geelong.
Just understand, he’s a woeful kick.

One of my favorite lines from coaches is when they say that once a player enters a club, it doesn’t matter where they were picked anymore, every player is available to play.

Yet, it always seems that the top 10 draft picks get opportunities prematurely and some keep getting games despite not performing on an ongoing basis.

The usual rhetoric is…
He can’t be worse than what we’re doing now. Until we see it, then swing back the other direction to bring him in because we can’t do worse than what we’re doing now.

We’re seeing this with Shiel. For some reason, people are calling him to come in next week. Yet, a month ago when he did play a game, it was ‘never select him again. Ever’.
And so commences the cycle.

Shiel played a quarter as the sub. He’s terrible as sub.

He actually has some form now, and our midfield looks a bit flat and one paced aside from Durham. Also has 200 games experience as well. Might increase his value in potential trade.

Until he’s next fails again.
Then it be ‘Never again. Please!’ or ‘It’s so nice to develop Shiel and play Perkins/Hobbs/Tsatas/Roberts/Caddy in the VFL’.

That may be warranted, if he comes in and is no good, could be the end of him, and yes there will be calls like that. If we win, its generally all forgotten.

Perkins - terribly over rated.

You’re new here aren’t you?

Perkins has had a fair run at it… we probably don’t have a need for a mid to be doing 65% or so TOG right now and he could use a refresh or rest to get back to the type of impact he had in the Carlton and Suns games (at least contributing a bit)

Is Archie finding heaps of the ball and in the right places to showcase his kicking? There’s your answer.

I’m not sure exactly what role he’s being asked to play, therefore it may be impacting his ball winning.

Against Carlton it looked like he was manning up Cripps at around the ground stoppage.
Was he manning up Danger for periods on Sat night ?
Gonna have to watch the replay.

He may be playing a more sacrificial role at present.
We do need him kicking the ball more.
If that’s as a hhf, so be it.

Edit…I did have the binoculars on Liam Ryan in the last qtr of the WC game.
Perkins was taking him on the defensive side of the CB.

If he’s been asked to play a role then he’s failing spectacularly. The good Archie knows where the sticks are, finds the ball, tackles, stands up when tackled and hits teammates lace out.

He’s been doing none of that for the last month or so. He should be dropped. Won’t be 'cos Brad Scott.

Again, I’m only speculating here,as I don’t know what % of time he was on Cripps in the Carlton game.

What is true though, is that Cripps had one of his least damaging games of the last 2 months, and Perkins was part of that.

Anyway, going to be interesting what role we play him on Fri night.
I don’t think he will be dropped.

Hadn’t thought of that but whats up with the mid 60’s% TOG then?
