#17 Todd Goldstein - don’t forget, he’s here forever

Full time ruck coach when he retires please

If he stays on its because he is our best break glass in case of emergency option… I think the choice will be his. Clearly he knows Bryant is first choice with Draper forward and Vigo learning he isn’t getting played at anyone else’s development and you can see how invested he his in the coaching side when you see him talking to Saad at the end there.

The reality is this year we have to persevere with him and maybe a MSD pick

I’d give him another year. He’s playing surprisingly well.

Plus, we know durability of our senior players has been an issue at Essendon for years. So many of our senior guys are cooked at 30. Great to have someone like Goldy who clearly has elite off field standards

i wouldn’t ! I am happy to keep him on as a coach but we don’t need him next year as a player. We may even fast track another tall like Vigo by giving him a go. Or alternatively someone we pick up in the MSD or ND.

Go for it?

Let him “retire” and do any of the following:

  1. Run with whoever we pick up in the MSD as the backup ruck in season 2026 instead. Vigo will have had another pre-season to further solidify him as being capable of at least being called upon to do a job if required as well. Those two might be essentially on equal pegging as the backups to Bryan and Draper.

  2. Pick up a jobber ruck in the off season as either a delisted free agent, low cost trade or via drafts or SSP. A third or fourth seed ruckman doesn’t have to be a great player. You’re hoping to not have to play them at all best case scenario or only minimally.

  3. You go bold and elect to go in with Draper, Bryan, Vigo as your three primary rucks on your list with break glass in case of emergency backup from Gerreyn, Cox & Wright. You may decide to pick up a key forward if you did this so that if one of these guys did get forced to ruck then you have slightly more key forward depth.

I’m not even saying any of these are superior or perfect options but I do dispute your call that 38 year old Goldstein simply “has to go on” as we have “no other choice”. There are choices.

Choice 4
Have Goldy as ruck coach.
And then pick him up in the MSD if 2 of Draper, Bryan and Vigo go down prior to MSD.

Goldy is essentially the ruck coach this year. IMO they kept him on the list not just as a break glass in case of emergency ruck option, but also to get around the football department soft cap and his salary not falling under that umbrella. He even said so himself, he thought his chances of playing senior footy this year were remote.

I’m happy for the club to spend some money and pay over the soft cap tax, if they need to for Goldy next year solely as a ruck coach. Bean counters at the club.

Those options are as good as Goldy going around again, if he wants to play on let him

I appreciate the shift he is putting in for us and how unselfish he is generally, but in no circumstances should he go around again. Completely cooked (understandably).
