#18 Lewis Hayes - thru 2026

If it is an ACL that is heartbreaking for him and the team

He looked really good and composed today. With Ridley out he was going to get a stack of games too.

Poor kid

Can I just say that until he has had his scan we should assume nothing. I tore my MCL and when I went to the doc he performed the standard Lachman test on my knee to see if it was an ACL. I failed the test and he diagnosed an ACL. It turns out I have kinda loose ligaments. After having an MRI all it turned out to be was a grade 2 tear of the medial, literally holding together by a couple of threads, but no damage at all to the ACL.

I appreciate the optimism, but unfortunately we’re talking about Essendon here.

We don’t get lucky when it comes to injury.

Strong upper body already, he’ll have 12 months to build strength through his legs and lower body.

I’m backing him to come back stronger

We probably got lucky with Harry…

Yep. I watched Anthony Daniher run off the ground and a few days later the news emerged that he’d done the ACL.

Hopefully Lewis gets a similar outcome to Darcy, not quite as bad as feared.

It’s bad when you get to the point where you’re like, this is normal and you’re not surprised. I don’t know who we’ve ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  off or what deity we have wronged but this really…can you have this much bad luck.

Really feel for this guy, he was looking good and had done his apprenticeship, deserves better.

Your story is not uncommon outside of AFL clubs. Outside of the AFL, they aren’t doing the tests often enough to be good enough at the tests for them to be reliable.

You did not return a false positive because you have loose ligaments, you returned a false positive because your doc was not skilled enough with this assessment. He/she then wanted something to blame, cos they were seemingly not big enough to admit they got it wrong.

Within the AFL they do it all the time. They don’t get it wrong often.

Sam Darcy is a perfect example of a club being pretty confident it’s an ACL, only to get some good news afterwards.

Fingers crossed for Hayes.

It’s been totally farked.

One of the small ā€˜positives’ is that it’s only May, so six month to get to a decent training intensity means he could be hitting things reasonably but modified by December. If he then has a break and comes back in the new year maybe he misses few games in 2026. He might be avoiding most contact early next year but his strength and fitness should be mostly back.

If it’s a reco, just assume 12 months, playing again in round 9-ish next season. Some are quicker, but that’d be a bonus.
