rhettrospective on You Tube has been posting a lot of old Essendon videos lately, as well as other games.
Is this footage of our last final winn😉
Thanks for posting
I have seen that clip before.
It is most likely in this thread…
The opening credits say the commentary was by Douglas Elliott. I guess that was probably Uncle Doug, but he sounds very different using his 1950 ABC voice.
Would love to have got my grandfather’s memories on this, but 20 years too late.
How’s the holding the ball against Hutchison. Such a different game. And amazing kicking skills!
IIRC, our Firsts, Seconds and Thirds were all Premiers in 1950. There used to be a picture of all three on the wall at Windy Hill.
It notes that in the video. First time apparently.
Some familiar names in the Seconds Premiership team, including the Captain/Coach.
Very interesting footage but heavily sanitised - according to reports it was an absolutely filthy game with several players reported and several more who should have been. North started it, and went after Coleman and Reynolds in particular, but we weren’t squeaky clean either.
Bill Snell, in his first season, looked to be a potentially great CHF but he was tragically never the same after a serious head injury in a prcatice game in 1951. He had a taste of what was to come when he had his cheek bone fractured in this game.
“woof”
10 years old, had started to go to Essendon home games, at times, all the way from my home in Auburn…now called Hawthorn…but no finals Yet. Essendon ruled the world then. Lone supporter at school, as somehow they all seemed to follow Geelong. Used to have our school sports at old glenferrie oval. Didn’t go to finals tho. Wonderful to watch this.
I saw that name in the opening credits, but l am not convinced they got the identity right, it sounds a very different voice to Uncle Doug. He was a stalwart on World of Sport, always of good cheer and a good Essendon man to boot.
I did go to the grand final the following year against Geelong, we lost by a couple of goals….i was distraught…and a nice person said to me …cheer up the mighty dons are never down for long.
Wonder what he is thinking now.
Probably not much any more…
Now look DJR as time approaches, I like to think, although on a higher plain somewhere, we are still following …without going nuts…the ongoing Essendon shambolic decisions with a feeling of calm.
One bloke who was prominent for North was Kevin Dynon who wore #2. I went to school with his son, Tony, who organises our biannual get-togethers with 6 or 7 who started young at our school, rather than be imported from other schools who stopped at year 10, or Intermediate as we called it then…
Tony dominated school sport at both cricket and football, but by his own admission, wasn’t good enough to play better than VFA and Ammos.
My great uncle replaced Coleman in that GF.
