Post saga, I decided there were many people’s view of football in general whom I would purposely choose to ignore and keep a wide berth of. These ranged from the media to fans of other clubs with a baseless, slanted and skewed view. I do this just as I would avoid anything Andrew Bolt would have to say about politics or Australia in general.
Interesting that Ryan was around in 2004. Haven’t checked thoroughly but he umpired in our round 1 game that year against port. The very next round was the incident with McLaren. Just saying.
I was listening to a podcast called Against the rules by Michael Lewis, and he talks about the way the NBA have gone about this. They basically review every single decision and make the error rate known to everyone, to prevent any kind of bias being allowed to flourish.
Regardless, you can’t throw the ball. Ever. Ryan is plain mistaken if he thinks there’s ever an excuse for throwing the ball. There ain’t. The AFL should come out and make this clear. Essendon should make them.
That was ok. The ump made it clear that he paid the free kick and not the mark. So JoeDan doesn’t get a stat but also the free’s get evened up a bit too. That’s what they call a win/win.
Not that it counts for much but it’s still getting airtime and certain members of the footy media are no less “confused” about it. Reiwaldt, who’s generally pretty balanced IMO, describes himself as “incensed” by the inconsistency.
totally agree if we had kicked better though it wouldn’t have mattered unless their attempts to get Collingwood over the line ended up more blatant than they were
This is the rule definition that it seems to me some AFL exec (Hockiing?) has told the umps to alter/relax, I suspect, as part of his mandate to break conjestion.
Holding the ball has been noticeably been altered all year from my observation.
stop dead still and not touch him… To be honest, I’m not uncomfortable about that one. Sure on slow motion it looks a lot like Pendles has stopped and picked up the ball, looked up, then ducked again, but live that looked every bit like a free kick and is paid as such more often than not. Mitch Brown “milked” one in the exact same way the week before.
There were plenty other decisions throughout the game that were far more perplexing than that one.
Let’s all just be thankful that it wasn’t the female umpire who happened to be officiating at the time, we would be in a world of trouble knowing how the AFL and media spin things.
Apparently it’s really low bias, because it’s measured and managed. I think it was also mentioned in that pod that they’ve noted that are part of what makes up HGA is unrecognised ump bias.
We have a maggot in our family. He tells us some interesting, behind the scenes things.*
Shaun Ryan spends his private time cross dressing. No BS. Maybe he should maggotise in a tutu.
IMHO he is the best Maggot doing the gig and we rarely get him.
