How likely is it that a guy that’s only ever played a full season once, that has done both a knee and an achillies, offers a good return on 800K+ over 5 years?
Well he’s in career best form right now and has I’d argue continually improved his craft up until this point as someone who was late to the sport.
Are you questioning what Zach Merrett or Shiel or McGrath are paid as well because it’s all rough ballpark and Draper’s form holds up decently well versus the others
Gawn did his ACL twice and he’s the best ruckman in the comp isn’t he?
About 1 in 10 (or 20) draft picks based on historical performance. So you might have a point……
Our last four picks in the 20s are: Hayes, Ridley, Redman, Laverde and Merrett. So historically a pretty good chance of getting a good player
I feel a lot more confident in Rosa picking decent players at twenty after seeing him pick Johnson at 70
Sneaky Alex Morgan omission going on here.
When did we take Van Uren?
Yep. Geelong have one of the strongest lists in the comp and apparently still have enough cap space to chase after two more elite players; Bris have room to chase after Allen & Draper.
We’ve front-loaded all of our long-term deals and still have about 3M spare, with the salary cap set to keep rising. We’ll have even more free if Shiel, Draper & maybe some others go.
Length of the deal, team balance + available list spots are different discussions altogether. But money-wise, we’re in a great position (have been for a long while now) and with fewer suitable FAs available every year, we should be using our cash asset to improve the quality of the list wherever we can.
Would’ve loved a Stengle, Ed Richards, etc as a FA, or to get in on the Bowes salary dump deal.
Fingers crossed pick-purchasing comes in soon, which would be great for clubs like us.
Yup he is overrated
Vigo lock him in for 4 years kid has got talent and puts in the hard work
I think you’ll find Rosa negotiated that situation to net us a first rounder.
Haha! definitely wasn’t deliberate
That’s 5. Anyway, you’re right. More probability of success than a first rounder….
I probably would have less worry giving him more years had he done the work any other year to get fit.
But the fact he said himself that he put in extra being a contract year screams massive drop off once the contract gets signed
He’s not in career best form; he’s on the long-term injury list.
Very likely, less likely if it was a pick in the 30’s.
Sam Draper was a rookie pick so all things being equal we could develop someone from the rookie draft just as we developed him.
The AFL is very conservative and I’ve only heard Cal Twomey talk about pick purchasing. Doesn’t seem like clubs or any media are talking about it which makes me think it’s a long way off unfortunately.
In all fairness the other journos probably don’t even know what it means, but I guess that wouldn’t stop them reporting it
IF they’re right, then that he’s seriously considering staying on $100k less than joining the premiership club is an absolute indictment of Draper’s attitude. If that is true, I don’t want someone with that little concern about winning anywhere near the club.
Normally this is very true. But there are several problems with the logic in respect of Draper.
- Firstly, we’ve possibly already drafted the replacements with Bryan and Visntini. So since we’ll likely lose one, it’s about maximising return and the subsequent team.
- Draper has a rotten injury history and has done an Achilles. Keep him around, and you need additional depth as cover.
- Draper is about to turn 27. With Essendon’s history of keeping players performing into their 30s we should definitely part ways now. Especially as we’re unlikely to be competing for the next few years.
Throw on the fact that he himself said this the year he got fit because it’s a contract year speaks volumes
