My issue with letting draper go is, he has finally after how many years fixed his biggest issue, which is goal kicking and he’s a ruck that can play forward.
A guy like Bryan is ok, but he can only play ruck, which makes the position limited going forward and generally means we can only play one full time ruck.
Draper and Vigo could both play as they’re both very good forward. I’d therefore be shopping Bryan before draper, simply because of draper’s improved forward potency.
I’m curious.
Entirely hypothetical because, yes, it’s Draper’s decision.
But if Draper’s compensation were end of first round, and you could trade Bryan for a second round, which would you choose?
I guess this boils done to which camp you are in regarding his output/potential. He has attributes that exceed our other rucks, and was having a good season. For me, he’s a point of difference that would be hard to find (as opposed to a pure ruckman or the cheap journeyman competitor). So I’m in the keep camp. I get why others see him as a way to get an extra high pick, and his injury history, but for me he provides a spark that we often lack.
Agree, BUT…if somehow Rosa could come up with a scenario where Sammy’s departing gave Essendon sufficient leverage to pick up either Harley Reid or Zac Butters then “have fun wherever you go Sammy!”
I’d let Draper go. But then I prefer Bryan in the ruck and around the ground. He has a much higher hit-out-to-advantage rate, and is an exceptional user of the football for a ruck. I rate good users. He’s also younger and less injury prone.
Draper is better at clearances and crashing packs, but I rate Bryan’s positives higher.
I don’t really see either playing long term as a forward. Which looking at our MSD picks is something I think the club agrees with.
Okay. lol. New question.
At what point would people who currently think it’s best to trade Draper, change their mind?
Not casting aspersions, but…if it was after our second round pick (seems highly unlikely, but still), still keen?
Well he is a UFA so we have no real say in it other than strategically getting a contract infront of him that would maximise value should he choose to leave.
Also, comes down to what you think is an appropriate contract for a ruckman (particularly one returning from a significant injury or with performance levels that may be debatable depending on your view).
Having said that, anything later than a mid 20’s pick compo based purely on pick value I’d think would make me pause.
But my opinion is based more on list balance and the actual position of ruck and what contract that position requires more than compensation.
The correct answer is we keep both. Anything else is idiotic. If we’re offering Draper not much more than we’re paying Gresham, the club is completely and utterly cooked.
Perhaps we are overpaying Gresham? (Aside from the years difference with Gresham a FA at the time only getting 3 years, it does cost extra to get a player out).
Draper is definitely the better player. In your hypothetical situation is he coming off his second, and worse long-term injury and wanting 800k over 5 years? And how much does Bryan want?
Also, if Draper gets us second band compo, it’s end of first round. If we’re trading Bryan for a second-round pick, it’s coming later regardless of the taker.
Draper had the athleticism to also play forward the only issue was his terrible goal kicking. He’s now a dead eye with his new technique, which makes him an effective forward to go with his rucking.
Bryan is too lumbering to be an effective forward, his tap work and field kicking are decent though.
