Townsend wouldn’t be at the club unless he had been sought and supported by both Rutten and Caracella, who I think most of us have enormous respect for. If they considered he was crap and not up to AFL standard after knowing him intimately for years, he would not have been recruited. Obviously they see more in him or know more about his ability than anyone on this forum. This gives me confidence that he is an astute pickup, will improve our list and has been tagged for a specific role within the team. Time will tell.

I dont think Townsend’s in the team to get the footy. He’s there to provide protection, much like Cotchin has devolved from ball winner to battering ram for the Tiges.
He won’t be a patch on Cotchin but the role is an important one in the way Richmond plays their footy, and Ruttacella probably think sacrificing a 26 yr old journeyman is a better idea than giving the role to any of our blue chip mids.
