2015 AFL Draft. Spoiler: We won

If we come 17th we should trade the 2nd pick to one of the teams that needs a tall, for a young on baller and a pick around 4 or 5. A kpp isn't as valuable to us as an on baller, we could potentially get 2 high quality on ballers for that pick eg trade it to Carlton for Cripps and their first pick, GWS might give us 2 players and their pick eg Hoskins-Elliot and Buntine. We need more than one good young running player if we are going to be decent any time soon.

I assume you are talking about Josh Schache when you speak of the tall we would take if we finished 17th?

You would pass on a 199cm key forward who is a dead eye for goal and has dominated the carnival and TAC Cup this season, kicking bags and taking marks like no man’s business, who would allow us to move Carlisle back and still have a tall next to Daniher who we were confident would develop into a gun?

We need a tall forward more than we need a midfielder at the moment.

We can target a gun on-baller through trade or FA this off season, there aren’t many young key forwards in the game as promising as Schache who would be gettable for us via either of the previously mentioned routes.

If we had the pick to land Schache and passed on him, we would be fools.

I think the assumption is Schache will probably go pick 1 to Brisbane, therefore if popular opinion is that pick 2 &3 maybe a key defender and a swingman what would we do.
I can’t see us selecting a key back even if he his the best pick at our selection.

There is every chance we could finish last at this stage.

Sorry Weitering and Francis - forgot their names.

Agreed. It’s very hard to see us winning again this year. Our percentage will probably drop a fair bit more as well.
Melbourne will pass us next week. That only leaves Brisbane, Carlton and Gold Coast behind us. They’re all capable of winning a couple more games based on form over recent weeks.

Suns play Brisbane in a few weeks and think Carlton has Brisbane also. Think Melbourne plays a couple of those aswell. Very real chance of finishing 17th or 18th

They all have players who don’t have this crap hanging over their heads who WANT to be out there playing footy each week.

Brisbane has players like: Beams, Christensen, Hanley, Rich, Rockliff etc who are all capable of winning a game off their own boot.

Gold Coast have: Ablett, Bennell, Dixon and Lynch who are all capable of doing the same.

Carlton are quite a limited team and a team that doesn’t really have any players who are capable of tearing a game apart but they are playing far better football under their new coach and have played decent patches of football the last few weeks and are making teams earn their wins.

Melbourne are playing a good brand of footy under Roos and have some talented young players who will be guns.

These are all teams below us that would all beat us at the moment.

I think Shache will go at No1 which would leave Weitering who is obviously a gun but we already have Hurley, Hooker and Carlisle on our list so I can’t see that he would improve is as much as two really talented running players. If Shache were to be available then that is different as him and Joe would be a very tough combination to cover in future and all our key positions would be covered with top line talent, plus we would have a forward who can kick which would be a nice change. I think we would have to come last to get him though.

I can tell you know Sache will go pick 1.

The “trade pick 2” argument only has merit if the other club are giving back two of picks 3, 4, 5. Its not as if we dont need the best key forward or best mid.

Partington

If we can somehow trade pick 2 for two in the top five I’m all for that!

You'd only think about it if you could get a Dom Tyson type deal. Good kid and only a slightly later pick.

spot on. a good kid and pick 7-10 would be nice

That’s the sort of deal I was thinking of. Melb were in the same predicament in terms of needing multiple talented on ballers. This was s good deal for both clubs. GWS are too high to do such a deal with unfortunately, maybe GCS

I think you have to bite the bullet and accept you won't get a top 10 pick in return. But if you can get a top 15 pick + good youngster, I think you still consider it hard. We have enough holes, and young mids can go the same way as young talls (Scully, Palmer, Trengove, Tambling). More picks hedges the bets a bit.

GWS are looking the perfect club

I there is one team that would target a key back its GWS. Weitering is a gun and GWS have loads of mids and forwards and are all about targeting elite talent. We know they have a glut of elite mids
Looking at the ladder you could see them dropping to about 11th or 12th or pick 7 or 8. If we ended up 17th (lots of hypotheticals I know) we should be all about trying to pinch a mid and their pick 7 or 8.

I do think they would be prepared to pay overs for access to Weirering. A gun key defender would probably be the last piece in moulding a premiership team. we might even get 2 players plus their top pick. Anyway we need to try and be creative, if we ant dos deal Weitering would’ve good compensation, although it would mean Carlisle would have to remain forward. The way we are playing though we might come last, it would’ve hard to give up Shache

If Carlisle was willing to go interstate GWS would be a perfect fit. On the rise, he’s 24 but experienced, they need the KP back. If players leave they’ll have a plethora of draft picks to use. Try and get a Tomlinson thrown in and we don’t need to use a pick on a tall.

When you have holes in your list it’s best available.
