2016 List

Has Lowden done anything since leaving Hawthorn last year?

That said, if we do a really deep cut of our list taking a few fringe players instead of pick 90 odd might be worth a chance. You’ve got bad odds either way.

No, has stunk it up at SANFL level

Who’s putting their hand up in the SANFL ?

What position player?

Mid or Small Fwd…

List of Player with contracts ending this year (from Duckworth on Bigfooty).
Bolded are the ones we need to keep.
Underlined are ones that have question marks hanging over their head.
There others are ones I dont see a future on the senior list.

Bellchambers, Tom
Browne, Alex
Carlisle, Jake
Chapman, Paul
Dalgleish, Lauchlan
Dempsey, Courtenay
Fantasia, Orazio
Fletcher, Dustin ( vet)
Gwilt, James
Hams, Will
Kavanagh, Elliott
Melksham, Jake
O’Brien, Nicholas
Pears, Tayte
Stanton, Brent (vet)
Winderlich, Jason (vet)

Rookie list
Aylett , Kurt
Long, Jake
McKenna, Conor (Alt Talent)
McKernan, Shaun
Steinberg, Ariel

That’s a lot of unsigned players. No wonder a lot of the list is getting a game.

A lot of careers on the line. Out of interest how many are part of the 34?

I’d trust Dunnas’ list over a bigfooty one. I hadn’t seen a Baguley announcement, for one. Normally bigfooty just a copy & paste.

IMHO.

Mitch Brown has been going very well at VFL level and I know the club were very impressed with him pre season. He's also a big key forward, something we can never have enough of, especially with Fletch likely retiring and Carlisle perhaps moving back to defence as a result. I think Brown will be back in the AFL system next year and it's a distinct possibility it'll be with EFC. What we desperately need (outside of the deadset obvious) is a medium lead up forward and a small crumbing forward, both of which apply forward pressure.

Surely these needs can be filled late in the draft. That Saad playing at GC now is playing very solid senior footy and was a pick 25(?) in the Rookie Draft. Shane Yarran is dominating WAFL footy yet can’t get a crack at 25 years of age. I think we’ve been reluctant to look at state leagues and we really should’ve been given our draft sanctions.

We might want Brown, but 17 other clubs could pip him before he comes to us. With the way our picks are going, it is unlikely we'll use either of our first two picks, so he'd have to survive to the 3rd round. I can imagine a team with defensive holes nabbing him before then.

Would fit in at swans if richards retires
or Tigers to help Rance out.
Fremantle need key defenders

not sure who would pay more than a third round pick.

Not that he would be leaving but is Daniher out of contract? The pinned contract thread says unconfirmed and if I remember correctly Mr Sunbury listed Daniher as one of the contracts being held up by Bellchambers’ negotiations.

I read he was signed to 2017 elsewhere.

Thanks. You’d assume so given most draftees are given 2 years and since his first contract would’ve ended last year that he’d be in the middle of his current contract.

If any of those sides thought he could fit straight in, he’d definitely be worth a 2nd round pick for them. He’s still young, so you would have 8 or so seasons of use. If you can recruit a player straight into your best 22 who fits a need when you’re in the premiership zone, you go for it. 2nd round for them are picks in the 38 to 44 range (after compo picks). So its not like they’re spending big bucks.

For mine after the retirements there wont be a huge amount needed to be delisted, dont forget we need to be able to replace them and theres only so many players out there

Retirements:
Fletcher
Chapman
Winderlich
Stanton (just a feeling)

Delist:
Steinberg
Pears
Kavanagh

Trade if possible:
Melksham
O’Brien
Ambrose

Upgrade:
McKernan

Retirements:

Aylett

Trade if possible:
Dempsey - let him play out career elsewhere.
Melksham
Kavanagh

Upgrade:
McKernan
McKenna
Long

Playing for careers rest of 2015
O’Brien
Browne

Thats heading to the draft with 2-5 main list picks unless dempsey/melks/kav get picked up.
Also assume we keep Tbell and Carlisle

Could keep long on Rookie list another year if it means a third rd pick, but I would like to see him and mckenna in the 1’s next year with 2 preseasons behind them.

Plus will have a whole batch of fresh Rookies to choose.
Tippa
Shane Yarran
Coghlan

Not sure why there is not more talk of Hams being delisted.

Roll in with (approx) Picks 3, 4 19, 23, 38, 40, 41

Get 3 players via trade for the Kav, Browne etc.

Might loose a pick of we get a FA ruckman.

Take 3 Rookies and another international.

Put on another development coach.

Not sure why there is not more talk of Hams being delisted.

With regard to Hams
The reason i think for most has been a) too many changes for one off season
B) has had a lot less time to prove himself than many others, considering his biggest issue is getting his body right

Not sure why there is not more talk of Hams being delisted.

Ive heard good things from VFL watchers, about his ability to win clearances and get contested ball. Needs time to build frame. When he has played afl ive seen a player who has gone in hard at the ball every time, doesnt shirk a contest. So would give him extra time based on this.

any info on where he is at the moment Reboot? I haven’t seen him mentioned in an injury report.
Some people have suggested family leave, but I thought he injured a knee in the VFL, missed a couple, then played maybe 1 or 2 and hasn’t been sighted. Is that knee still troubling him and/or are they just giving him plenty of gym time?

Not sure why there is not more talk of Hams being delisted.

I hope the kid makes it. He’s a ripping bloke and goes in for the ball very courageously.

For simplicity, this is from our perspective, assuming Carlisle stays.
IMO:

Certainty
Carlisle, Jake - 4
Baguley, Mark - 2
Bellchambers, Tom - 2
Stanton, Brent - Yearly from now, maybe 2 given list status
Gwilt, James - 1

Re-Sign
Fantasia, Orazio - 1

Certainly gone
Chapman, Paul
Fletcher, Dustin
Winderlich, Jason
Pears, Tayte

Which Leaves:
Browne, Alex
Dalgleish, Lauchlan
Dempsey, Courtenay
Hams, Will
Kavanagh, Elliott
Melksham, Jake
O’Brien, Nick - 2015

This leaves us with 4 out, McKernan up = 3 spots. I’d be going:

Delist Dalgliesh, Kav and trade Melk and/or lose Demps to FA.
NOB earns another year if he finishes the year well, and along with Hams and Browne would be thankful for the state of our list giving them another year.

Aylett, Kurt - 2015
Long, Jake - 2015
McKenna, Conor - 2016 (B List - International)
McKernan, Shaun - Upgrade
Steinberg, Ariel - (Need to give him 2 yrs if we upgrade, won’t have earned it unless things change drastically in a mth)

Assuming that one of Melk/Demps goes, that gives us 7 spots. You might keep both of them and re-sign one of Kav/Dalgliesh (Borderline, but I’d keep Kav) if we decide the draft is of such quality that 5 picks is all we want. Maybe we upgrade McKenna early or Stein on that basis (cue more flames)
