Just on the value to the bulldogs of FRPs this year, a couple of scenarios:
WB’s current draft hand
pick 14, 41, 54
their draft hand stays as is, JUH gets bid on at 1:
pick 14 gone
pick 41 gone
pick 54 gone,
they have to take 2x rookie type players at the end of the draft
pick ~13 next year goes to pick ~40
their draft hand stays as is, JUH gets bid on at 4:
pick 14 gone
pick 41 gone
pick 54 goes to pick 59
NOW, what if we trade them 6 & 7 for Dunkley (I’m assuming we hold pick 8 in this scenario so we adhere to the AFL draft rules).
they get 6&7, JUH gets bid on at 1:
pick 6 gone
pick 7 lose pts
pick 7 goes back to pick 18
OUTCOME - they’ve traded Dunkley for pick 14, pick 18, pick 41, pick 54 and a 1R pick upgrade next year
they get 6&7, JUH gets bid on at 4:
pick 6 goes back to pick 62
OUTCOME - they’ve traded Dunkley for pick 7, pick 14, pick 41
There is some real value for the Bulldogs in getting our first rounders and by gar I am so sick of everyone just hand waving it and saying “Oh they’ll all be eaten up so they don’t want first rounders”. It’s a special case because they’ve got JUH sitting there, with the discounts they get, they have a huge opportunity to get high level talent in as well as JUH. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
