Is it just me, or is anyone else as confused as I am?
What was wrong with the old VFL? Does this fix it, and if so, how?
WTF was the AFL thinking going to an integrated AFL/NEAFL with interstate travel in the middle of the pandemic?
The old VFL was made up of stand alone teams with their own list and salary cap plus AFL “reserves” teams comprising a few vfl listed players and predominantly AFL listed players.
Now we seem to have added the wrinkle that both of those types of teams have to play a certain no. of players from the U19 TAC (or whoever the current sponsor is) and have to have a set no. of players from different age groups.
???Maybe? Buggered if I know.
It seems to me to be throwing a whole lot of modifications and restrictions into the mix, and I think it is fairly clear that the first consequence will be a lowering of the standard. Teams like the former Willy and Port filled with hardened mature, nearly AFL quality players, will no longer exist.
Guys like BZT, Ham, Jones etc will be competing with teams almost half filled with U19"TAC’ kids instead of teams full of players at least the equivalent of themselves.
It wasn’t so much what was wrong with the VFL but more what was wrong with the NEAFL. So to fix one problem the AFL have created a whole new set of problems. Standard operating procedure for them really
The VFL is hardly a feeder league for the AFL when you start the season one month after the AFL season, while only playing 16 games - You would be better to play in the WAFL,SANFL or TFL.
Can’t see anything going wrong.
I was really hoping a NT team would join the the SANFL and I hope once the pandemic whittles down we can open up talks again.
SANFL season starting on Easter weekend so the Crows and Port reserves will get a couple of weeks head start on the rest of the comp (don’t know WAFL start dates)
SANFL sides all playing at least 3 trial games aswell
Why don’t the SANFL grab Port Melbourne and Williamstown, along with a NT team - Then you would have a strong 12 team competition.
The Victorian AFL clubs should organise a mini-VFL round-robin set of practice matches in the weeks before the VFL starts.
It makes 0 sense hey. So half our list have to sit out for a month before finally getting a kick. Weird
You’d think they could have postponed this transition to an interstate league for a year given that we’re in the middle of a pandemic. Wtf are they thinking?
You are assuming they actually thought about that…
Couldn’t organise a popped collar at a polo tournament
Looks haggard, not enough coke use obviously.
Woohooo, Round 1 SANFL fixtures released and season kicking off with Norwood v Port on Thursday night of Easter.
No mention of age restrictions/requirements on teams in that article. Is it definite or just an idea? Because that is what will dilute the standard.
The best thing in that article was the promise of live streaming of every game. That would be great. Competition for Radio DJR.
I didn’t see any promise. The author may not realise that live stats and various streams already existed by 2019.
But yes, someone needs to fill the gap.
Who is this hobo?
Yep was a good sized group and they looked pretty sharp. Still culls to come of course but it’s starting to take shape. It’s a much younger group than previously, but plenty of talent.
