Whilst great for these blokes mentioned it’s a nightmare for the state league clubs and the compensation is absolutely woeful. The AFL really has to look at a better system
Oh, I’m sure they will. The AFL really cares about state leagues.
Have you seen much of Jacob Baur??
Any player comparisons??
Any relation to Jack Bauer?
Seen a fair bit of him, I’m not huge on comparisons but I’m not sure he is exactly what we need currently
Good to see Nick Cox doing something with his spare time.
"Culley, described by Stingrays coach Nick Cox"
We have holes all over our list and in Langford’s absence, we actually do really miss a medium marking forward as that essential link between mids and forwards and to provide a target around the ground. Chungus isn’t that player. Cox is perhaps that player, but at our list-building stage, I’d prefer to just take best available player regardless of position (outside of a tall defender or ruck with no forward craft).
We lack quality all across the ground
We lack depth all across the ground
If it’s a medium forward we take, so be it.
The AFL could properly invest in a proper national reserves comp and the MSD could be restricted to players amongst that comp. But if the AFL did establish a genuine reserve comp and devoted the necessary money and resources to it, it might drain some of the talent away from the WAFL/SANFL teams but at least they would have to scramble midseason.
TBF the last one we picked up was Nick Martin and he’s likely top 5 in our BnF
maybe your the source off blitz
Journalists/communication specialists only need the most tenuous link to write a article these days without much research.
what do you think of Bauer?
There’s two approaches isn’t there… Approach #1 is we identify the players that suit our needs and select on the night accordingly. Or #2, we simply take at pick 3 who we identify is the best available at that point… Appears to be different approaches. I’m of the belief that unless the best available player happens to align with our list needs on the night, we simply select the best player available rather that looker further afield for the best player that suits our current needs…
Thoughts?
Baur looks like he could do a job for a lot of teams. Strong hands and a neat right foot. Gets into good positions and can work up the ground.
The Swans have a pretty good academy and are really good at producing quality hard players. They have a really good footy philosophy and it looks like Baur comes from that too. Sydney take a couple of players a year from their academy and there are bound to be players that miss out and have to earn their opportunity through the State Leagues. Good luck to the kid
Last I heard the compo was 0. Have you heard differently?
They were giving out $10k at one stage
Yes but that was ND I understand and has never been MSD
Balancing act. Eg, If the best at 3 is a defender, who is only slightly better than a next best who is a forward, we should take the forward as that’s our area of need and we have a truckload of defenders. If it’s a massive gap, then take the best available.
Compensation Model
If a player is contracted to a State League Club and listed via the MSRD, the State League Club will be
eligible for $10,000 in compensation from the AFL Club.
Any compensation paid to a State League Club will not be counted in the Soft Cap.
State League Participation
Players who are selected in the MSRD that stay in their original State are subject to the following:
• They will not be permitted to play against their original Club unless otherwise agreed by all
parties
• The player has the right to return to their original Club to participate in finals if their service
is no longer required at their AFL Club
My understanding is that the last clause is dependent on the length of contract offered.
I think I remember Richmond letting Parker play WAFL finals last year
Seems like cox isn’t going on the inactive list. Hurls though might at this rate
