For me, i rate Parish. I also rate McGrath. I honestly think McGrath was heading towards a similar level of ability. But because we have too many similar types, and McGrath can play a second position, he’s moved to the backline. I honestly feel we can replace Parish internally, which makes him a prime candidate to move on. So a lot comes down to me really rating McGrath and feeling if he was given Parish’s midfield remit he will excel.

Is it a risk? Yes. I mean, hell yes. But if McGrath steps up, we’re ok. If one of the picks we get steps up, we’re ok. If none step up as much, but the blend works better we’re ok. If two of McGrath and the replacement picks step up we’re better. If McGrath fails and the replacement picks all fail/are mediocre, we’re worse off. BUT, can chase a midfield FA/trade which is easier if you have a midfield spot.

I feel the risks are all weighted in our favour.

For Shiel, it’s all about his age and resetting the midfield. Setterfield for Shiel is likely a step back in talent, but might be a step forward in midfield mix.

Remember, Adelaide made the Grand Final after Dangerfield left. Mitchell & O’Meara didn’t save Hawthorn. Collingwood made a prelim without Treloar. Geelong won without Ablett.

I honestly feel McGrath would step up, so allowing him to do so while adding ~3 first round picks would be worth the risk to me.

It’s an interesting take. And one that surprises me, as I don’t actually see McGrath and Parish as comparable types. I can understand the arguments about having a relatively small midfield, especially when not using Stringer in there, and the somewhat “sameness” of a few of our mids. Primarily I see Parish, Caldwell and Hobbs having similar skill sets and being a similar size. I don’t see McGrath as having the same skill set, so I assume you’re trying to change the shape of the first choice midfield slightly by including McGrath.

My main problem with that is that I don’t rate McGrath as highly as you apparently do as a midfielder. I don’t see him as working as well in traffic when the heat is on as any of the other 3.

The other problem is that I see McGrath as being more comparable to Merrett (but without the footskills) in terms of his best version of himself midfielder. ie a “on the edge of the contest” mid rather than a “contested ball mid” (both of which are inside mids, so not an outside mid, but one that gets the ball that bobbles out of the pack, or gets on the end of a short handball from the contest). Having two small, not overly strong, not overly explosive or powerful, players in that role doesn’t work for me, so I feel like you’d be better off staggering the Merrett and McGrath midfield minutes.

I still think Parish is our best “at the coalface, win the contest” mid. I could understand making the decision to trade him if your view was to play Hobbs and Caldwell in that role such that your 2 main midfield groups might be

(and this assumes you keep Shiel. If you don’t then perhaps it’s Langford or Durham or Martin or someone else)

They are OK options, but I feel if you retain Parish it allows you to use Caldwell slightly differently, and allows you to leave Stringer forward more, only running through the centre when we (or he) need a spark.

I think we are still horribly thin for midfield depth. The key for me is to draft well this year, and add midfield role players as well (eg Setterfield), so that we have depth in the role and a broader range of midfield types. Trading out Parish may enable us to bring in quality of a different type, but I’m not sure that’s necessary. Parish can be one of the best 5 in the league in a role that matters. Fill the other types with the role players. Use McGrath in ways to maximise his value (ie use him through the mid when players are tiring and he can use his running power to take advantage when the heat is ever so slightly off, later in quarters and games, while also using him as a lockdown defender when the matchup suits.)

Regarding your take on the risks. McGrath “stepping up” is a pretty big risk. The picks aren’t stepping up for at least a couple of years, so we’re writing off the next couple of years if we are relying on that. The blend I’m still not sold on. The “if it fails we can chase another FA/trade” is an option either way.

Shiel makes sense, but is unlikely to be easily tradeable. Trading Parish I think would be a “tanking” decision that immediately makes us worse in the hope that in 3 years we will be better (when McGrath is 27), with the hope that mix and internal improvement limits the amount we’re worse. I think we can be significantly better by fixing the mix and getting some internal improvement, while keeping our best players.

I’ve just watched two highlight packages of setterfield from this year. its fair to say, his disposal by hand and foot is very good. the round 22 game V Melbourne highlights showed him to have great hands on the inside, and his 2022 highlights had numerous lace out or well weighted kicks.

Against Collingwood (I haven’t viewed his highlights but I assume it is there) he layed a big tackle on DeGoey and got HTB for it. I remember seeing it at the time and thinking perhaps I have underestimated him.

Played a great game given the opportunity to use his strengths

In the last 2 games of the year, which are the closest we got to finals-like, Setterfield played very well. 25 possies, tackles, score involvements.
He showed himself to be a good replacement for our first selected midfield.
With Curnow, we are unsure if he’s still at that level. But we are sure that he has 1, max 2 years left.

I agree, this is a bit confusing.
He played some good games this year and I think is better than some of the players who have been re-signed in recent weeks.
I think this may come back to bite us if he is traded.

Yep, for a late pick, with our list lacking a taller inside mid (especially if Langford is injured, and he’s more hybrid forward anyway) this is the easiest of all triggers to pull. Absolutely worth a punt.

Just don’t play him as a fatside wing.

maybe. maybe not. i dont know. Im still keeping expectations in check, but it seems like a low risk/high reward situation

i just really like his disposal from the vision. he’d be our best ball user (through the middle) behind merrett as it currently sits, imo.

Expectations in check? You’ve just said he will be our best ball user besides Merrett lol. He is excatly the player we need in the middle. I reckon he will mesh well with Shiel/Parish/Merrett

correction he “should” do that, but will he ? there’s just as highly a chance he’s in on the HBF or forward flank at this club.

but the age old question is, what do you do with the other players ?
shiel can’t play any other role (effectively) bar mid. parish has spent all bar the last 2 years forward and won’t want to give up mid time, esp if he’s wanting to use it to bump up his value for a contract, and we have merrett who can play as a forward, but is also still your best and most consistent mid over a longer period than the others.

you also have a new coach coming in, who even tho highly rated can’t imagine he’s gonna come in and rock the boat that much as to usher straight into the midfield setterfield.

Based on what? Isn’t success based on the players selected with those picks, not just the use of the picks?

Geelong fans unsure about Tanner Bruhn should revisit what Giants co-captain Toby Greene wrote about his former teammate in his Herald Sun column in grand final week: “Tanner Bruhn is a good kid. He shows a lot of training but it probably just hasn’t transferred into a game yet. But I’m sure that’s not too far away. I definitely tried to help Tanner this year, I’m pretty close with him. He talked about his future a couple of times throughout the year and he was just torn on what to do”.

Bruhn, 20, has won 20 or more disposals just twice from his 30 AFL games. But based on what Greene saw at training it sounds like Geelong has got another good midfielder through the door.

Sound like Davis and Caldwell.

All fair questions.

If you['re bringing Setterfield in, you do it to play him as a big body in the middle. He’s got a second string to his bow as a medium forward, but that’s an option for when he’s being rested, it’s not what he’s for. Any other position, you’re wasting your time and his.

For me, Setterfield means that we can leave Stringer forward and not have to destabilise our forward line every time we’re getting monstered in the middle and need some size there. And he’s got a much better tank than Stringer, so we lose less on the defensive side with him, and we can leave him there for longer.

That doesn’t solve the Parish/Merrett/Shiel/Caldwell logjam in the middle though. And that’s before we start trying to put Hobbs in there.

Brisbane are effectively saying that Dunkley is valued at two pick upgrades, likely to be in the region of an 8-10 pick move from late 20’s to late teens. Amazing.

Calling it now, I think Setterfield will be the bargain pickup of the year.

He’ll surprise a lot of people given he’ll be afforded every chance as an inside mid. Blues have been playing him out of position.
