2023 BBFFL#2 Discussion

Wasn’t that due to a severe shortage of rucks aimed at helping to reduce numerous teams down the bottom constantly playing short? Changing game format is far bigger difference than a rule used to help bottom teams not play short. We’ve certainly not changed game format in my time in the league.

So I think its fair to say everyone is impacted by the position changes. I will provide some more breakdown by coach shortly.

Does AFLF have online drafting?

Manual drafting with a spreadsheet sounds laborious.

Yes it can be done online

I do feel like that’s pretty standard though to lose the duals at end of season and then get them back. 50 odd gained dpp in the round 6 change 2022.

round 6

round 12

round 18

Also I have just checked. Last year at the start of the year we were stuck with the CD positions except for 17 players who UF added dual position onto. So thats the only real difference between what we have done with positions and this year.

It looks like this year after Rounds 5, 10, and 15 additional changes will be made.

To help everyone here is lists as they currently stand

Could the following coaches please cut their lists back to 30:
@AVanderScreamer - cut 3 - no idea how you managed to get 33 players on your list
@Aceman cut 1
@wezza need to cut 1
@DonToDeath cut 1

Based on these figures I would propose moving to 6B, 6F, 5C and 1R setup if consensus is to run with AFL Fantasy.

Note - @ivan’s lack of ruck is not a position change screw up, rather his sole ruckman to finish 2022 was Ben McEvoy who has now retired.

Player positions are one thing, but game format is the killer for me. I’ve drafted/traded my squad in the knowledge that we’d be a 5-7-5-1 format. Surely we need some foreword warning that we’d be changing our whole system?

It changes the game completely. Midfielders were very valuable based on the fact we needed 7 to fill plus a potential utility, now with no warning that will be cut, leaving my squad short in every other position and a massive surplus in one. Right now in my keepers I’ll have one forward and need to fill a minimum 5-6 forwards with my picks that are all 100+. Plus backs.

Is the game format customizable on The Bench site?

All of a sudden I have 13 forwards. So I think we will all need to make adjustments.

Just suck it up and whatever is easiest for Redbull as he runs the whole thing.

Sounds like Ant and Crazy need to start a trade conversation then.

Yeah, the move to 5 mids and no utility is certainly the big shift. I now have a heavy surplus of mids , though I haven’t yet looked at the overall squad properly to analyse where the quality does or doesn’t lie. I’ve a feeling that this change isn’t going to help my squad as it currently stands. So be it, I made a conscious decision last year to try to help some of lower ranked squads and this may add to that.

It’s going to have an impact not just on the sides makeups but also on overall scoring. Essentially, we’ll be putting bench forwards and backs into starting 18’s , and unless theyre dual position some gun mids may end up bench players rather than starting utilities. Strength in depth will be a curious strategy change to manage. One other thing is if UF/AFLF are stringent in their “C” only rulings then the pool of forwards/backs will thin quickly.

I personally don’t mind what we do, if AFLF is the easiest system for the League admin then go that way. We all have lives to live . Just tell me asap what we’re doing so that I can take a meaningful look at my list - which I haven’t bothered to do until I know the position and field layout changes are known - and get cracking on some trades if needed.

I vote for AF for ease of use for RB and co who do a huge amount of work to keep this fun. Melk and DD had to do a shitload to do manual positions and it led to friction as well. I still hate Melk all these years later for not giving Daisy Thomas forward status. Also, the bench will probably get bought out this year. Might as well bow to big corporate now.

Redbull was asking for more opinions so was simply giving an opinion, as he asked.

If we are going with what Redbull has shown a preference for, then we’d be using The Bench website, because as he has said, we can use the same game format.

Does AF have more ease of use? So far it’s been nothing but problematic for lots of people. The Bench provides at least a year to prepare squads format wise, position wise, drafting/pick and trading wise for any significant changes.

Redbull has provided a pretty simple solution that requires no manual positions or legwork from anyone.

If we use The Bench, carrying over 2022 positions isn’t something I am keen on. Not something we’ve done before, so why start now?

I meant we all need to suck it up.

So I’m still deliberating on how to move forward. One thing is evident is that not everyone is going to be happy. No system is like for like so there are going to be compromises.

It really sucks that UF has gone. We didn’t realise how good it was until it was gone.

Anyway I’ll make a final decision in the morning based on the feedback above and the general admin required above.
