So if you have an academy or f/s picked you just have less of an ability to trade back in the draft for points?
Brisbane understand this and have stockpiled 3rd rounders
They have west coasts, ours(from the dees) and the suns third rounders to go with their own first.
on current ladder position that gives them 1679 points.
Which should let them cop a bid on annable from pick 4 on without going into deficit.(25% discount on pick 4 is I think roughly 1600 points for a match)
And if they do they will only slide back a spot or two in the 26 draft.
The suns have about 3500 points. So they should at least be able to get their highest rated kid. Maybe their top 2 preferred who will both go first round.
I think the deal would have to be in our favour value wise. Those two second rounders are looking to be sitting in the perfect spot to catch some nice talent.
Intersect the blue line at 602 points, telling you how many points you need to hand over (that’s because it’s 686 DVI points for pick 22 less 84 fixed deduction after the first round)…
Then turn right…
You hit the orange line at like Pick 24.5, so you could match with pick 24 alone…
You hit the grey line at Pick 36.5, telling you how to match with two picks (so 36+37)…
You hit the yellow line at Pick 43, telling you how to match with three picks (so 42+43+44).
(The wobbly finger-drawing ruins the accuracy of my graph, but I can refer to my actual spreadsheet)
**Some closing comments about discounts**
If GC’s academy prospect is the first to be bid on in the draft, like Uwland, they won’t suffer any of the pick devaluation that occurs with 2nd round picks during the draft (you know how pick 25 actually drifts out to be pick 30+ during the draft). This whole phenomenon is nonsensical, but the AFL has created a Frankenstein system.
If your academy prospect is bid late, at 40+ or something, it’s also a nice discount because the fixed point deduction mathematically accounts for an increasing percentage off the price.
If your academy prospect is bid at pick 18, you only get a 10% discount, and you might be trying to match with picks that have been losing value on draft night like an unfashionable meme coin…basically, I’m thinking that different positions in the draft actually have different levels of discount.
We will probably see clubs queuing up in the draft…GC have a bunch of picks clustered together, ready to be knocked out…BRIS will have their cluster just behind, ready to ride the slipstream in…then maybe SYD for Max King…if Essendon have a cluster after that, it suggests we will be matching on our NGA’s…theoretically?
He’s had bigger statistical performances, but this could be a game that helps to really boost Thrillem’s pick one candidacy. His contested ball winning as a midfielder was hugely improved here, which makes his iffy kicking much more palatable, and his ability to swoop on loose balls and pace to burst away from congestion was as elite as always. His defensive activity was truly outstanding as he racked up 10 tackles among many other one percent efforts to disrupt the opposition.
Yeah, OK I see it with now with Thrillem. That clean handling at ground level is so sharp for a guy of his size. He impresses me far more than Sharp tbh.
Wouldn’t be against trading up for him if Rosa thinks he can be the next Bont.
If you’re looking at potential to be stars (highest upside), you’re going for duff tylter and duursma I think. But these kinda guys are more likely to be busts too than your regular sized mid.
I hope we don’t end up with sharp, his kicking looks terrible, so hopefully the eagles take him.
I would be stoked with Sharp. Have watched him for years now and he’s a Leader, fearless & genuine culture shaper. His kicking is no worse than Caleb Serong who I see of lot of Sharp in.
