I’m not sure we could afford to get Duursma. He barely hits a target by foot in that video.

Being at that awkward height for a key forward this is something I would have him do occasionally as you can kick plenty of goals on a wing in the modern game

He looks good on a wing - putting a tall forward on a wing is something Brad has been keen on this year. I wonder if it was our recruiting teams idea

Byrne is a dynamic performer at Talent League level, able to produce match winning displays as a midfielder or a forward. He was predominantly in the midfield this game, his physicality at stoppage a standout both in his ability to win the hard ball and his intensity to apply defensive pressure with multiple efforts. The more Bryne plays the further he continues to move up draft boards.

Frankston have a few that should be well watched.

Blamires has been stellar since moving into the midfield/fwd role. Id heavily look at Jackson Voss too

If the AFL give them pick it would knock out the idea of them getting a priority pick.

we’ve had a few too many recently who haven’t (yet) transferred their performance level at under age footy to AFL level. thinking tsatas, davey, perkins, francis but we know there are a lot more.

interested to hear from those who watch a lot of junior footy, what they look for that specifically addresses this issue of inability to make this transition. what are the relevant metrics?

I think you’re labouring under a misapprehension here.

@THE_DON1 has been working in the recruitment space for years. He’s the one with the insight, info, experience etc.

I’m just some guy making draft content from his bedroom.

For a person that is making draft content from his bedroom, you do a ripper job and we all greatly appreciate it. Keep it up!!

Makes it easier for us to be draft and list manager experts and to think we should be employed by EFC :joy:

I’ve read and listened to quite a few scouts from Premier League clubs.

One thing I believe AFL is a long way behind on, is judging the potential of players. That also goes for the draft media gurus.

Far too many people get caught up in the excitement of stats, and abandoned the eye test. We look for the best player at under 18 level, and don’t acknowledge the upside of other players.

Many of the EPL scouts, are not looking at the big bulking 13 year old who is knocking kids out of the way, scoring goals for fun. The kids with the best potential are the ones with balance and technique with ball at feet. They may not even see much of the ball at Academy level, but if you can see their balance and technique (things you can’t teach) then they are diamonds your after. The rest of the skills can be taught.

The kid who scored 5 goals is likely not going to get any better than he is.

The other area thats overlooked more than anything, is their character. What drives them to improve? Are they easily influenced by other team mates? Are they in it for fame/money, or to win? Do they include others in dressing room conversations?

Character is the most overlooked area in List management. Having a cohesive dressing room, with characters who are driven to compete and challenge each other is vital for being a premiership team. You can have the best coach in the world, but if the character of the dressing room is toxic or lazy, or there is cliches on your list… then You have no hope.

I’d say many clubs do consider these factors. Some clubs would be more sophisticated than others.

Sam Mitchell said a few years ago that the number one trait they recruited on was “character”.

One of the questions I’d have for a scout.

Do you attend club training? I’m not talking about Vic metro, where all the eyes are on these blokes, and they know they’re being watched. I’m talking specifically about local club training.

IMO scouting training sessions is just as valuable as on match day. This person’s professionalism to training is what you’ll be seeing 5 days per week at an AFL club.
