2025 draft spec (Part 1)

@Aceman are you worried about Sharp’s leg speed? How do you think he compares to Hobbs? Better ?

You can see how clubs get draft night fever and trade big for current picks, I now have an emotional attachment to a Cumming/Robey combo with a side of Sharp.

The idea of drafting those three together to shape our midfield for the next 12 years makes me all the more angry that we didn’t get a better deal for Merrett.

……or top compo for Draper

Robey should have chilled out the last few weeks of CTL finals if he wants to play for us so badly…

The main problem with drawing a comparison to NBA and NFL drafts is that they have a pool of thousands of elite, mature college players to draw from. Your chances of drafting a star player in the 5th round is relatively good compared to the AFL draft where you’re drafting 18 year olds from a much smaller pool of limited talent. Unlike NFL/NBA it takes much longer and relies on more luck to regenerate an AFL list, particularly when the draft is as compromised as currently is.

I want Sharp + Cumming or Grlj. I go back and forth on who I want more of Cumming/Grlj. Then target Hibbins-Hargreaves with a third pick (potentially GC pick 15) assuming Dovaston will be gone by then. Match bid for Sweid. Take Huss as Cat B if he goes undrafted. Done.

I think it’s more likely people aged 30+ a teenager wouldn’t have their spirits as crushed as much as someone who has been a kid/teen since we last won a final

See how i go. My predicted 3 players that slide past pick 15 on draft night: Lindsay being a big call I realise but i still think teams may like Farrow’s overall game more:

Greeves
Lindsay
Marsh

I really like what you said here, I think this is where it is important, to validate in a measurable way, that what we think they are as a player, is what their athletic profile tells us.

My most obvious is a guy who look to have breakaway speed on field, but don’t test specifically fast or vice versa. Kinda confirms the reason why they play the way they play.

Or a guy who seems everywhere in their field just doesn’t test great on endurance, maybe his smarts are how he does it. Things like that.

You think they are teenagers?
I think they are adults in their 20s and 30s (if not older).

Edit…
The Don1 beat me to it.

Would the Robey fans consider trading 5 & 6 for 2 & 13?

I probably would. 13th pick is not too different to pick 6 tbh but you have one player already that has a high ceiling

I wouldn’t, if it was for 1 then yes

I don’t think they’ll trade 1 but I think that trade for 2 is realistic.
Sharp would suit WC’s list and Richmond would potentially pass on him with theirs.
So WC would get him anyway and if we really rate Robey it could work.

I do like the idea of an explosive mid forward

I think it takes longer to regenerate coz we have so many players on the field compared to basketball, soccer, rugby. It’s one of the reasons I’m an advocate of 16 a side, easier to climb the ladder and individual players make more of a difference. Obviously this is in addition to less congestion, higher quality players in the comp, less salary costs to clubs and the AFL etc.

We have to draft this kid.

He fills just about the biggest need on our list.

Has to be a huge priority to get him in.

Definitely. After the first 2-3 picks then it’s basically up in the air in terms of best available.

Have you seen how quick his handball is under pressure at the coalface in his highlights package? Any lack of legspeed looks to be more than offset by speed of mind and reflexes.

What’s the difference if it’s 1 or 2. The Eagles will take Duursma either way. 2 ensures we get Robey.
