I understand this thought process but I still think we are better off trying to get 3 picks in the first 15 and taking whoever doesn’t go before our first pick out of Sharp/Robey.
As much as I want Robey to don the sash I think this is the best approach for a club as ■■■■■ as we are.
I think most of us would like 3 picks in the first 15 but likelihood of doing that it is the hard part. Worst case is us having jept 3 picks in the 20’s for me and losing 21 on Sweid bid.
I don’t think thats a terrible scenario myself. Two top 10 picks, then Sweid plus two more picks in the mid 20s. That’s five solid selections, plus a later pickup of Huss.
I think trading 21 & 27 for 15 has to be a possibility.
Pick 30 will come into the mid to low 20’s after the Nga players are picked and should be enough for Sweid.
If we trade 5 & 6 for 2 and 13. Hopefully get our hands on 15.
2, 13 and 15 - some good players will be available at 13 and 15.
Maybe Lindsay, Phillipou, Barker, Dovaston or a slider at 13 and 15
I think Lindsay’s draft position might hinge on where a Dean bid comes. The Fark Carlton community seem desperate to add some kicking skills off half back.
Yeh fair, I guess its how each person sees the draft past pick 25. I probably dont rate it myself
But no issue with others who do and see a lot of the games like yourself and Pascoe
If I were to guess, I imagine we are actively shopping those picks in the 20s to try and move up or get something else done… possibly even moving one into next year. A top 5 bid for Dean would probably force Carlton’s hand somewhat. Ditto super high bids on the GCS players which would probably force the Suns to try and trade into more points.
A poster on the Eagles forum was floating scenarios that included placing a bid on Patterson at pick one as a strategic move to force GCS into a bunch of possible scenarios in reaction which would be beneficial to the Eagles.
My hope is that Richmond see different needs with selecting Smiley last year and pass on Robey. Hopefully they go with Grlj and Taylor. We can then take Robey + Sharp.
I might be wrong, but I feel like people are obsessing a bit on Robey, and its partly because he’s an Essendon fan, and partly because he could go before we pick and there’s an attraction to the thing you can’t get.
I’ve said this before but I don’t have a particularly strong preference for Robey or Cumming in that attacking mid, high half forward role. Cumming has fallen out of mind a bit I think due to his injury and not playing for the last couple of months.
Setting all that aside, there are reasons to believe that the Tigers won’t go with Robey. He projects as playing a similar positional split and role as Lalor and to a lesser extent Hotton and Smillie, so they could well believe they have that need covered. There’s also Robey’s own comment that the Tiger’s were one of the last teams to show an interest in him, and he didn’t interview with them until the combine.
Bear in mind 15 could become 13 (effectively) on draft night if Carlton have to use both 9 & part of 11 to match a WC bid on Dean. I say “effectively” to mean 13th of the available players excluding FS and Academy. So it’s a bit more likely even that any sliders like Greeves, Lindsay or Marsh could still be there at the GC pick.
