2025 draft spec

Speed, kicking and evasive skills of Grlj really stands out as elite.

This is the mock draft that set me off. He has moved up the draft board quickly over the last couple of weeks… be it a long time to go for the draft.

I agree and was pumped with what i saw, then someone said he looks like McGrath, so i have been turned off him ever since. Not that McGrath is a bad player, but it’s not the type we need more of.

And end up with pick 6?

Someone said that about me and my wife had the same reaction.

That’s obviously a joke. She was never turned on by me.

We would likely be stuck with him, too high to be bidding. And when we have our own NGA’s dont need to start bidding wars.

A lot depends on how Clarke, Johnson and Nguyen develop. We’ve got a few promising candidates for small backs in the VFL.

And Lual as well.

A look at prolific rebounding defender Jacob Farrow from the West Perth Falcons. Jacob works hard to find space and present an option for his teammates and uses the footy fantastically well with his classy left boot. His 189cm height and solid marking ability should allow him to be a versatile defender at the next level, and in this game he conceded nothing to his direct matchup in 1v1 contests.

In this second episode of State of the Draft for season 2025 I give my high level thoughts on how this draft pool is shaping up, go through my very early player ranks and cover some prospects that have emerged through this first block of games.

I don’t know, I’m still not excited by the top end of this Draft. I feel like you could find similar players later in the Draft.

Another week, another massive performance from Swadling in the WAFL Colts, upping his 40 disposals from last week with 42 this time. There was so much to admire about this performance, his combination of size, speed of mind and footwork allowing him to move around congested space to find a stack of the footy and give West Perth a significant stoppage advantage. Maintaining our watch on his disposal, he was poised and creative with hands, but his kicking was a bit off here, regularly missing targets short early in the game and even coughing up a goal on turnover.

Are we in with a shot for Duursma or will he go too high?

Impossible to say. We have no idea yet where our picks will land and until we’re deeper into the season we won’t have a strong idea of Duursma’s draft range.

What we managed to get of this Rory Wright performance was solid. He’s increasingly showing his aerial prowess and we’re starting to see some slick moves in tight spaces to dance his way out of trouble. He had some of his typical lovely left foot darts, but also missed more targets than we’re used to seeing from him.

Unfortunately we also lost all of the third quarter and a chunk of the fourth due to the classic Talent League Technical Difficulties, so Rory might have been absolutely brilliant in that term, we’ll never know.

Early call, but if Sam Grlj plays well in champs and stays between pick 5-10 range then I would say we pick him. He has exactly what our midfield needs, speed, solid skills and vision and genuine x-factor as well, bit of Butters about him. Grab Josh Lindsay too if he’s available.

We need players that can kick but also break the lines, we’re far too slow currently and both offer traits that target key areas of weakness.

Grab Sweid, who has real tenaicty and power and throw in Huss as a solid goal sneak and we have the makings of a more dangerous side.

Who? Do we have a Koby coming in?

Son of # 10. Darren Bewick.

I think he was talking more about academies than father son.
I agree thought there should be rules, like must be in academy for say 3 years or no access at all. None of these Johnny come lates like Josh Eyre or North trying to get Sanders weeks before draft etc.
Had Horne-Francis found out he was indigenous pre draft could probably have got into Ports academy.
