No sure continually trading out of the first round for future firsts is a wise move.
Kind of kicking the can down the road a bit.

devils advocate, they’re more useful for academy matches
eg gold coast might legitimately not have enough capital to match all their players this year
I feel I may not have phrased my question correctly. Imagine you’re a melbourne fan, no first round pick, weak draft (for the sake of this discussion), every chance you finished bottom 5 in 2026 and someone says “we should trade our 2026 pick to get into this weak draft that we already traded out of”. Does that sound attractive to you?
One upside for us is that there seems to be quite a few key forwards and outside runners with kicking skills in the top 15 or so prospects, which are probably our biggest needs. The lack of worthy no. 1 contenders does seem a problem though.
Did Cal say why it’s considered weak?
I’m sure by the end of the season there will be a solid top 10. If we could end up with say pick 6 and 7. I’d be pretty confident Rosa could find a couple of guns. If Dodo was still in charge I’d say trade them out.
Wouldn’t it be detrimental for him to call the draft weak considering half his show is based on talking up draft prospects?
His info comes from recruiters.
There are strong drafts and weak drafts
Yeah another Perkins and Cox draft
Firstly, the champs haven’t even started. Way too early to be making proclamations about the strength of the draft. Was the “next Dusty” Sam Lalor thought to be generational at this time last year? No, he was mid first round from memory.
Second, the way the draft is being described is not too bad from our perspective.
Lack of depth is fine. We will have two first rounders and then I suspect we will focus on converting our seconds to late picks (and moving some capital into next year) to get Huss and Sweid (assuming they continue on the same trajectory). So effectively we will have 4 first (or early second) round talents. I doubt we will play much of a role late like we did this year.
No star power? Reality is we are not picking in the first 3. WC, Richmond and North (Richmond) have those spots sewn up. So we likely have two picks from 4-8 which is not the very pointy end anyway.
And again, it’s way too ■■■■■■■ early. Grlj or whatever his name is has bolted from the blue to now be discussed in early calculations.
Worth pumping the breaks a bit.
A lot of that discussion, to be fair, has been “uh, how do you pronounce that exactly?”
WC will know it’s a weak draft and demand more.
Potentially, but there would be pressure on them to accept. The footy media and public will just look at the headline of two x first rounders for Reid and think WC are being unreasonable if they don’t agree.
There is this narrative that GWS accepted 3 first rounders for Jeremy Cameron, but they were all in the teens from memory.
Those were the Dodoro. Thank ■■■■ that’s over.
At least we will have options with 2x top 10s.
Trade for player.
Trade to clubs needing early points.
Take to draft.
WA seem to have a few highish rated picks and some with the potential to rise which might please WC in a deal.
They might see this as their pre Tassie draft to target with Harley and Allen leaving they could end with two or three top 5 picks and another highish 1st.
Between him and HEA, I’ve lost sleep trying to workout how to say their names
For all those still sad that we didn’t pick his brother:
A strong game from Jevan, one of the few we saw from him in the new season before going down with a broken arm. He showed here that he’s more than just a special athlete, able to exert a strong influence at stoppage and impacting the scoring for his team with setup disposals and a goal of his own. Unfortunately the broadcast missed the first 8 minutes of this game.
Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier entered the season considered by many as one of the elite prospects from SA. He missed the start of the season through injury and took a couple of weeks to shake off the rust, but if this performance is anything to go by, he might just be ready to start justifying those earlier lofty expectations.
BOB is a powerful inside midfielder, able to extract the footy from congestion with a burst of speed and agility to get outside into space. One of his real points of difference from the rest of the inside midfield prospects in this draft is his strong and penetrating kick. In this game we saw that kick deployed to damaging effect for the most part, although he did miss a couple of targets along the way.

I like the way he moves through traffic, makes time for himself.
SA is gonna have a very good midfield at the champs
Hopefully we take Jevan Philliphpou
