2025 list in new positions?

As a hypothetical, where could we possibly see players in totally new positions next year?

Just kinda spitbaling here:

Archie Roberts takes Nic Martins’ position, so Rusty can play wing to half forward… We need more score and he can be damaging, we know that…

2MP or Nick Bryan plays mainly Ruck, so Draper plays more permanent KF… 2MP has actually shown great signs in the ruck and can swap well with Drapes or go forward himself and kick goals… I’m not sure Nick can do that at this stage…

Merrett plays half back, so Parish, Caldwell, Durham, Hobbs, Shiel and Tsatas all rotate thru the middle?..

Hobbs a pure tagger?.

With Drapes, Caddy, Langers and a floating Jones, inside 50, Pidge plays as a deep crumbing forward. We really lack forward pressure and good small forwards. Kako other goal kicking, pressure, crumbing SF…
Guelfi always locking down opp damaging HBF, and one or more of Perkins, Martin and Duursma delivering into 50.

Cox, Reid, Hayes, Saad or possibly even Baldwin lock down Laverde’s position because we traded him…

Or Saad as a small to medium goal kicking forward? I have good feeling, fully fit he has it in him at either end…

Jade Gresham purely as the sub? Burst type player

Riddles or Red dog to swing forward, swapping with Langers mid game?..
Like Carlisle, Hooker and Hurley could do…

I believe we need a little or major shake up, so I’m just throwing these out there…

What’s your thoughts?..

My best mate coached Jordan Ridley at oakleigh chargers through his draft year. When drafted, he said he’d be one of our best before long and he has always, and still maintains Rids would be great as a center square midfielder.

Wouldn’t surprise if Draper and Bryan line up on the wings in 2025!

Goldy could give us some run and carry off half back next year. Worth a shot.

I’m thinking there’ll be rotations rather than positional changes.

I’m expecting the following rotations…

Half back & wing - Martin, Roberts, Cox & Saad
Forward & wing - Gresham, Davey Jnr & Menzie
Forward & ruck - 2MP (80/20 split) & Draper (60/40 split)
Forward & wing - Jones (95/5)
Centre Bounce & Wing - Durham (80/20), Perkins (75/25) & Tsatas (50/50)
Centre bounce & forward - Parish (75/25) & Caldwell (75/25)

The rest should all play their main role. I have Jones as a situational position change to try and turn the game.
I’ll probably get some criticism for the Tsatas call, but he’s not going to be a full time midfield and nothing else. That’s not the way the game is played. He needs to learn to play elsewhere on the field to allow for rotations to actually occur. The backline isn’t for him. He could be tried forward, but I think as a wing he can develop his running capacity a bit more than as a forward.

I’ve gone away from a medium sized midfielder resting in the forward line to allow space for small forwards to work in and maximise speed in the forward line for pressure. Most teams run this way unless they have a Bont or Cripps who can be just as much of a worry for their opponents in the forward line as a small forward. So I’m thinking more towards using our small midfielders as a small forward option. I think Caldwell can trouble his direct opponent more than Parish.

Reid or Cox could be moved to full-forward given Wright appears to be out of favour.

Personally I think excessive positional experimentation was a problem this season. To list some examples: Kelly and Jones aren’t wingmen. Martin is a half forward/wingman.

Hopefully we solve these issues with new personnel as opposed to putting square pegs in round holes.

Jones will never be a winger and currently not good enough to be a forward, try him down back. Unless Reid is fit then Jones plays VFL.

Martin needs to move back to a wing and forward. El Hawli takes his spot from HB as an attacking defender who can kick. Roberts down back.

Merrett can move to a HB/Mid rotation

Laverde changes positions to VFL.

Play everyone in their best position. If they cant make the team in their best position theyre out of the team and play VFL in their best position.

  1. McGrath - back pocket (wish we would trade)
  2. Draper - 1st choice ruck
  3. Parish- centre sq mid
  4. Langford - mid fwd
  5. Tsatas - centre sq mid
  6. Caldwell - centre sq mid
  7. Merrett - HFF (its time to move him out of the middle
  8. Hobbs - centre sq mid
  9. Shiel - centre sq mid
  10. Weed - key fwd
  11. Gresham - small fwd
  12. Setters - centre sq mid
  13. Cox - half back
  14. Ridley - key back
  15. Laverde - key back
  16. Perkins - HFF
  17. Goldy - 1st choice ruck
  18. Hayes - key back
  19. N/a
  20. Wright - key fwd / back up ruck
  21. N/a
  22. Duz - centre sq mid
  23. Jones - key fwd
  24. Bryan - 1st choice ruck
  25. Stringer - med fwd
  26. N/a
  27. Redman half back
  28. Duursma - wing
  29. N/a
  30. Caddy - key fwd
  31. Reid - key back
  32. Mckay - key back
  33. Davey - small fwd
  34. Lual half back
  35. Guelfi - small fwd
  36. Davey - small fwd
  37. Martin - wing
  38. Roberts - half back
  39. Vigo - ruck
    41 saad - wing
    47 menzie small fwd

So based on this our best 22 should be

B: mcgrath mckay reid
Hb: redman ridley roberts
C: martin parish duursma
Hf: merrett caddy langford
F: stringer wright gresham
R: bryan caldwell durham
Int: tsatas perkins cox hobbs
Sub: guelfi

No room for Draper?

I’m not against the idea of using Perkins across half back. Obviously not for his pace, but for his kicking. If that meant Martin could be used more forward it might be worth a look.

How about we just play pick your position out of a hat for each and every game.
Really spice things up, the opposition will never know what to expect.

Perkins HBF?..
Yeah, come to think about it, I’d like to see him at least trialed there…

Being on the winners list at the pointy end of the season would be nice.

Who’s Rusty?

Might need a 7th defender off the IC or a plan to shuffle when needs must.

In this team - Martin, Duursma and Cox can all rotate through the backline if and when needed

I was thinking similar with Jones. He is very athletic, has decent size and strength, loves applying pressure and is a strong tackler. Maybe his best instincts are served defensively rather than in the forward line.

Otherwise I don’t believe he is going to be in the 22 long term. He’s not skilled or creative enough to be on the wing, we have other options that would be better placed running in that position.
