2026 draft thread - WE ARE NOT TRADING OUR FIRST PICK! READ THE NEW DRAFT RULES (Part 1)

No, but the assumption is that if they don’t get pick 5, they will have traded for Butters and got something like Geelong’s or WB’s first, and they would use that plus our 16 to match at 3.

Really?
He hates Geelong and had the chance to go there previously and said no thanks

I’m assuming we bid on Cochrane. Then take the player we want at pick at 2.

It triggers everyones compo pick, makes Port pay up, doesn’t endanger us in taking Walker if Carlton don’t match (although they can and would) and also makes our player feel special at 2.

I think if we then bid on Walker at pick 2, they’ll match.

You would think draftee character will be a major factor for EFC this year, esp. resilience, self-reliance & leadership. We will lose a lot of games and the young players won’t get much from our seniors. They are going to need to take over the ship before they are due. Another Dyson Sharp or two would be handy. Any candidates among the top ranked?

We should bid on both Cochrane and Walker.

That’s a crazy take his kicking off his preferred right foot is elite. Off his left is more hit and miss but it still has good distance. His kicking action is superb too unlike tsatas who kicked pillows and who had no penetration is his kicks even in highlights videos.

Hypothetical. Not that this would happen of course but what if port got pick 2 and 3 for some reason and pick 1 absorbed pick 2 and some of pick 3. Would they get the compensation pick for pick 4 given they would still be able to use it? Obvious going to happen but a thousand ght exercise really

Depends if we actually want Walker (potentially?).

In which case we should bid on Walker first, then do whatever - I assume it’s pointless trying to work miracles with Cochrane.

I tend to agree.

We shouldn’t be normalising Geelong being allowed to do their dodgy free agency + trade overs for a Port hack deal being mooted for Butters.

AFL needs to publicly state any of that crap is not permitted. Same goes for King.

*If it benefits us, theyre allowed to do it this one time.

Completely agree. Let’s hope those injuries don’t effect his movement too much

Its of interest to me which ones we are focussing on now that Spikes assessment is that we lack pace and thats going to be factored into who we draft and where we play our existing fast runners (Kako)

Winner.

Be happy if the club picked this bloke.

Already at 192cm Nic Martin has big body mid potential and might come back with a bit of upper body development, but might not have the strength through the hips needed as an inside mid. But yes, he should be added into our midfield mix ( almost a forgotten man)

I don’t see much wrong with it if they seperate deals. You can’t legislate for a stupid deal. I mean if we offered Port pick 19 for BZT the AFL wouldn’t even blink at that

I think theres a very public playing out of this eg. Twomey openly spruiking it on FC and elsewhere that Port are looking to do this as a way to maximise Butters compensation. It is against the rules.

Like anything you have to prove it especially if multiple parties get involved or it’s spread out over other years.
The AFL have ticked off worse deals before

I think they wouldn’t, but not for the reason you’re thinking. In order to get a compo pick, your natural top 5 selection needs to be pushed back by a bid. In the case you outline, their pick wouldn’t be pushed back, because one pick would be added, and one pick subtracted, so Port would still be picking at 4.

Effectively all the other clubs are paying and Geelong isn’t. That’s just not right and it would be obvious. It’s one or the other but not leveraging free compo into another deal.
