2026 rolling best 23

A bit of water to flow under the bridge but right now with current delistings & pre draft/trade I’ve got;-

Blaki McKay Nguyen
Ridley Reid Roberts
Redman Merrett* Duursma
Durham Caddy Perkins
Langford May Kako

Bryan Caldwell McGrath

Bench: Parish Tsatas Clarke 2MP
SUB: Hobbs*/Setters*

Emergency: Gresham Johnson Prior McMahon

Depends what happens with Merrett but looks like he’s staying now - and I think we will likely keep one of Setters and/or Hobbs I reckon given our lack of midfield depth. Redman to the wing in a more attacking role for him - Blaki & 2MP support Bryan

It’s not the worst 23 in the comp - is it..?!?!

If Blakiston is in the best 23

Yes.

Same goes for Tsatas and Hobbs.

Hopefully we have some draftees putting pressure on getting a game - Robey, Dovaston, Sharp, Greeves, Taylor, etc

I’m a bit Torn on whether to put Blakiston in or Jones, I know Brad loves Jones, but Blakiston offer extra ruck and flexibility.

Blaki is great - can play defence or ruck hardly the worst player on our list!

Blaki might be a worse kick than Draper, but if we don’t add another ruck this off season might end up the 23rd player (presuming sub is gone) purely from a backup point of view. Even then I’d just back in Wright if Ruck 1 goes down.

Wonder if we try Langford on the wing/HF role. Then have one of May/McMahon in as well (May adds more pressure)

What is the timeline on injury returns?

Bryan should be okay for round 1.

Martin mid year?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Martin is back earlier than mid year. Will Ashcroft was 342 days, and I would put Martin in his category. That puts him returning 19th June 2026…I will have to take him out.

For our forward line to be potent, one of MacMahon/May/ Edwards/Jones* need to develop into a 50 goal a year full forward.

And we need another crumber along with Kako (remember when Orazio and Walla lined up together?) Gresham is not that player.

Langford can play high half forward until Martin is back.

Hopefully that can be Sweid, or Durham. Durham playing more forward I don’t hate as he has the tackling and defensive intensity but big enough to still take a mark.

I like May the most of that list as he’s shown the defensive pressure with his tackling and seems quite mobile too.

Only way to give Durham more forward time without losing our clearance ability is if Parish can get back to 2021 form.

Blaki definitely isn’t a worse kick than Draper.

I really don’t understand the criticism of Blakistons kicking, it looks awkward but it’s actually quite effective.

Tsatas makes Blakiston look like Merrett.

I saw Durham forward more with the presumption McGrath stays in there, Merrett remains, Parish isn’t injured.

Tsatas makes everyone look like Merrett.

From what I saw of Blaki, was by far our worst kick from the back 6, with Laverde there.

However, statistically speaking he went at 75%, so I guess I need to bow to those stats.

Mind you Laverde went at 77%. That tells me they both probably had the red light kicking objective given to them, which is try and get the ball safely to a better ball user, take no risks.

For next year we just need 2 of Caddy/Wright/Langford to be around the 50 goal mark.

Blakiston, Reid, Ridley and McKay is way to tall in the backline.

I would think if Blakiston plays early it is as ruck if Bryan is still recovering from his ACL.

If there’s no sub next season, 5 on bench, you can run a second ruck for sure. If that second ruck happens to have some positional flexibility, bonus points. Would have thought Blakiston only plays as ruck/back up ruck. Presuming the first choice back 7 are fit.

I was thinking we just need 4 of those 3 to be at the 50 goal mark and then we will be right.
