2026 rolling best 23

Recently I was listening to SEN and Josh Jenkins was told while he was at Geelong if you or any other senior player were not making a difference to win games of footy, you should not be playing, the spot will be given to a younger player..

If you take that into account, playerts like Perkins, Gresham and maybe Guelfi have had their chance, time to move on..

that sounds like a good method to me - we should do that for sure

I’m hopeful on Huss, of course.

But our current small forward/high half forward contingent are truly horrible and in need of not just one player to add to Kako as a bankable commodity.

We need to move past Gresham and Guelfi. Unwin has pace which is more than I can say for most but his kicking means that at this stage he’s a wait and see.

In summary - I’m open to Huss being a quality AFL player but aside from Kako who was an academy product, we have neglected quality small forwards at the draft for the last 20 odd years IMO where others see their value in the modern game. Netting Dovaston and Huss who needs time to work on his aerobic fitness anyway, wouldn’t have been over indexing.

Regards to Sharp vs Farrow, maybe we rated Sharp higher but tactically we took Farrow before him to land all three.

i’d argue we are probably 3, at best, competent small forwards off most teams

kako is good, and that’s it

I’d be surprised if Guelfi and Gresham are still on the list next year, while Huss and Unwin were very late picks. More often than not, these picks don’t come on

I’d be shocked if we don’t target the best small forwards in upcoming drafts. It’s our clear list deficiency

I think Gresh gets unfairly labelled on here yes he was down last year but the whole team sucked, the year before he was leading or nearly leading alot of forward stats like goal assists etc and kicked 19 goals.

I think what would help is if we played forwards instead of mids in the forward line and embraced an attacking mindset

I knew there was one poster on here who would stick up for Gresham. Hadn’t clicked that it was you.

I reckon he’s someone who has been coasting and happy just living on an AFL salary for a fair while. I personally think he’s done and shouldn’t be factored into future projections.

But look hopefully you’re correct and he has a late career revival.

It was Kako’s first year, and it was sensational. We certainly need to give him help, i am hoping Hussein or Unwin can come on but we will see.

Iam not defending his year last year it was an absolute dogs breakfast (not the word I wanted to use). But his year before was alright if he can get back that and some and add Kako and Huss it starts to look better.

Like I said though I think our biggest issue with our forward line is we use a mid there and roll the up to the contest it essentially leaves us a small down then guys like wright may McMahon Langford aren’t capable of helping lock the ball in either which in turn denies us repeat entries and puts more pressure on a weak defending midfield and then the defence.

We are the second worse team in the competition for tackles inside fifty and fifth worse team for retention inside fifty yet overall our pressure acts and defensive pressure acts are fifth best so it all leads to me thinking the problem is gameplan using forward line players up at the stoppage and using immobile players in the forward line as well it is systematic not just one player.

So what Iam really saying is Brad is the problem.

My best 23 has all of Robey, Sharp and Farrow in it.
Gresham just about to maybe get selected on the bench for the magoos.

Preferably no Prior. Perkins in if he’s over his OP but he needs to earn it.

Clarke in. Not necessarily Johnson. Cox if he’s fit.

So would have McGrath , Farrow, Parish, Langford, Caldwell, Merrett, Fiorini, Robey, Kako, Cox, Ridley, Sharp, Wright, Roberts, Durham, Bryan, Redman, Duursma, Caddy, Reid, McKay, Clarke, Nguyen

Make up your mind.

I have no idea that some of it would be coaching/structure related but I also think personnel is a big problem here too.

I agree but more so that’s it’s the talls, third talls and pseudo forward mids that cause a lot of problems retaining the ball in my opinion.

Gresham to spend the year in the VFL and then delisted as soon as it’s possible

Geez how many small forwards do you need?

Let’s say the optimum fwd set up is as follows

two tall marking forwards

One pressure defensive focused small

I attack focused goal kicking small

Mid sized attacking forward

Mid sized linking high half forward

We both know that isn’t going to happen. It’s a contract year, and he will play for a 3 year extension.

suss every good team currently. They have plenty. They also arguably have better options in reserve than our best smalls

I think you have a point re Gresham @Tbone

he’s just under a goal a game small forward (0.9 goals per game) and he also has averaged 17 disposals a game during his career..

Thats much better than Guelfi - 0.6 goals a game/12.5 disposals, OR Kako - 0.7 goals/11 disposals

Whichever way you cut it our small forward stocks look thin so wouldn’t be surprised at all if Brad selects Gresham round 1

I think given the kitchen sink the crows threw around trying to land Sharp he might be a genuine best 23 player pretty much straight away.

Regardless of his ceiling he has a floor good footy watches reckon will translate?

What do people reckon watching any of our training?

Gresh is a good player when he applies himself, unfortunately he hasn’t applied himself for a full season for us. I think I remember he had some personal issues going on last year so hopefully moved past those and ready to go

Also does well in goal assists and score involvements, Iam not saying he is the best player out there as people like to think when you defend a player but I feel like he suffers from optics of appearing too selfish or perhaps looks disinterested Iam not sure
