#22 - Sam Durham - thru to 2032!

I too love the bloke but Bomber for life?

Is he only playing until he is 31 or does he have one of our famous contract triggers for an extra year or more?

When he signed his last extension, he did so just before breaking out big time. He would have been contracted well under his worth.

I suspect we’ve used this renegotiation to front load a lot of extra dollars from his future years, in to 2026. I’d bet he’s probably gonna make an extra 500k, or more, this year than what he was going to.

Not sure it would be $500K more, probably more in the realm of $250K-$300K extra per season, which to me is fine. He’s a superb footballer, popular amongst the group and I highly doubt him getting a contract upgrade would ruffle any feathers because he deserves it. Better that then holding him to a deal which is well understood and have other clubs try and poach him. Keep him happy, make him feel valued. He seems really invested in our football club.

I reckon it’s a bit of a cultural moment.

You have a bloke desperate to get out (whether that’s still the case or not), but then on the flip side of that coin you have a young leader who is doubling down and wanting to take the club forward.

Durham is also a big McGrath supporter.

You didn’t read what I wrote.
Yes his new contract would be on more coin.
But they also would have changed it to be front loaded, so that this calendar year, he gets a ā– ā– ā– ā–  load more, compared to what he was due to get this calendar year. Not saying an extra 500k per year.

We are well under the cap. Just positioning ourselves for free agency.

A lot of this going on I reckon. Kako extending, Durham extending, Merrett talk and then Scott speaking openly about the plans.

I think we will be going very, very hard.

I reckon he will be on $1m plus a year and probably our most expensive contract ever.

I very much doubt that has been on much more than $500-600k so it’s a nice increase

I love duz (who doesn’t) but no way is he a 1 mil a year player.

I look forward to his injury next week.

Seriously though, have we ever benefited from a long contract?

The rot started with Mercuri and has spread.

We probably need to spend some of our cap. We haven’t managed to attract any big name players so we’re probably struggling to meet the minimum.

You might be right, he is probably worth more than a mil/year.

He isnt the finished product yet.

The way excise is going, it’s a smart move to prepay for durries.

Tassie will come for him Buckley is a big fan and now that’s not going to happen.

Yeah i agree. I reckon he has another gear. It may be a really good decision money wise and its fantastic, and super important he’s signed on, but yeah i wouldnt think he’s commanding a mil a year. Like nino said too and i didnt consider this, buckley has been durhams biggest fan since day 1. He was always talking him up and when he goes to tassie, he’d throw durham a juicy contract

It could still happen, players move under contract all the time, but it’d (now for sure) come with a hefty return for us.

This was to ensure Tassie don’t tempt him with a big offer. Signed long term on big money it never even enters anybody’s equation.

The cap has evolved a lot.
$1M/year is not that big anymore.
Draper went north for just under $1M/year. I’d be very comfortable offering Durham more than Draper.

Though I really have nfi how much he would be getting with his current contract, other than, he will be getting a lot of $$$ this year for sure.

This was my initial thought also, but I reckon we have to re-think how we perceive million dollar per years players given there’s about 60 of them now, a number that will continue to grow as the TPP rises.

That was the crux of my response to WOB.

Durham is a fantastic player, but in todays money he isnt worth a million per season.
But in 3 or 4 years, I think he absolutely will be given the fact he will keep getting better and money will be worth less.
