Jones had the most intercept possessions (7) in the game (interestingly Lachie Neale also had 7 which is incredible for a mid).
Has to learn which kicks to take coming out of defence. Did tire late and Hipwood started to get on top.
Jones playing in defence as a 2nd/3rd tall is worth persisting with for the remainder of the season and infinitely better than a cooked McKay playing in defence.

He kept running at the ball carrier and leaving his man completely open. You cant get caught half way between the ball carrier and the forward, its one or the other. this caused so many goals i lost count.
He just has no idea where to position himself, add to the fact he gets pushed aside with any contact, it makes him a complete liability down back.

Not saying he was great, but he looked far better than on the wing and had more presence than up forward. Considering he has hardly ever played back it was a small win given he’s still likely to be on the list next year.
Also from a team perspective he and Reid actually felt a better pairing and there was way less crabbing than when McKay or Ridley get the ball. Yes he turned it over but at least he was trying something unlike Ridley who takes the safe option every time even though he’s one of our best kicks.

I still think he’s worth trying in the ruck…Can’t be worse than Blaki there…although it looks like we are too scared to drop Bryan because he was supposed to be the next thing…he isn’t.

Was quite a handy footballer
Jones intercepts were good, his kicking was deplorable. I rather Jones than Mckay at the moment, at least he wins contests, sure he just gives it straight back but so does half our team

He was named in the bests for us. I don’t know who does this, whether it’s media or the club. If the latter, FMD. He was absolutely woeful. Can’t defend and it’s not like he was precise by foot or anything and helped us set up scoring chains. 10 disposals at 60% efficiency.

He’s got pace…he got some ground balls…he held onto some tackles…he kicked one OOTF but it wasn’t by much…he kicked to a contest and the teammate was soundly beaten…I’m interested to continue the backline experiment.

Agreed. Something we’ve sucked at for years.
The fact some on here thought he played well or should keep getting games sums up exactly where the clubs at. Failed forward, winger and now defender in 7 years in the system. Just inventing roles for him at this point and has shown nothing. If you watched him live yesterday you would have seen he can’t defend to save himself and it’s an indictment that he’s getting games and contracted next season.

Riewoldt just smashed him on agenda setters for his 3 kicks out of defence to start the 3rd quarter. Lucky he was named in our best.

The reality is that twice Jones kicked out of defence to Merrett. They were not perfect kicks but two poor efforts by merrett to contest the ball and in both turnovers, Hipwood was free and kicked goals. Now Hipwood has hardly been shooting out the lights, however, it was an even battle.
It doesn’t matter whether he plays slightly better in the backline.
