Yeah, like I said - I have no medical background, and I’m just going by gut. Actually I’m looking at it from a physics perspective. The biological systems already in place to keep joints together are of an order of magnitude greater than sticky tape across skin. But I don’t discount (as I mentioned before) that taping certainly would make someone more ‘aware’ of a joint, and that may lead to a benefit in itself.
I’m not making any claims here - just an uneducated opinion.
I always taped my ankles after repeatedly rolling them both while playing and while just walking around. I just had dodgy ankles and would often roll them just by placing my feet on the wrong angle and each time injuring them would make it worse. It felt like my ankles were loose just flopping about ready to roll at any moment. With proper taping my ankles stayed still and stiff, it felt like I couldnt land on the wrong angle because the tape prevented my foot from flexing to a dangerous position in the first place.
Ask any snow skiier. Your foot & ankle are locked in, you never roll an ankle, but how many people do you hear about doing their knee while hitting the slopes?
Problem is he has had a injury interrupted preseason and doesn’t have much base fitness yet.
Not like last year when he was running around all over the ground and some were saying he will be the next Nick Reiwoldt, working his opponents all over the ground.
Still think need to get games into him, because he did well last year and is youth, but not sure I would rush him straight in after 4 weeks, need to see how the forward structure is going and maybe he returns via the VFL…
I reckon it’s odds on to be longer than 4 weeks. Especially if it’s as severe as the media reports that spoke about torn ligaments (as opposed to stretched ligaments), suggested.
My guess is it will be more in the 6-8 weeks in terms of returning to actual matches. Especially considering his history, age and interrupted pre-season.
We haven’t really heard from the club though so hopefully we get a report from Murphy this week.
The theory is it’s actually the other way around, I think?
If you’re immobilising a joint long term, you get less feedback than you normally would, and more importantly those little supporting & stabilising muscles don’t get as much work.
Short term better, long term not so.
But real world, there could be any sort of minor ankle stability issues that we don’t know about that the physios & docs would be working around.
Well, in my mind - you cannot ‘immobilise’ a joint with surface tape. I see it something like taping up a door hinge so it won’t fall off. Something like a ball-joint? a shoulder, for example? Nah, I can’t see it.
My own joints are farked, mate.
Also - I fully realise that I’m a non-medical person potentially arguing with people with medical degrees about the value of taping. So my opinion possibly carries - well, no weight.
No relevant degree here either, but a couple in the family.
There’s plenty of videos on ankle taping, they explain and show it better than I can explain. But safe to say, a lot more than one or two layers of tape. More like half a roll per ankle.
Why? There was an article on afl.com that said the club confirmed he had injured his ankle at training but was unable to determine how long he will be out for, Twomey said it would be multiple rounds. Perhaps they are still determining roughly how long, and it probably doesn’t make a difference given we know he is missing round one anyway.
I have been about as optimistic going into this season as I’ve be been for many a long year.
Jones’ injury just popped the balloon.
I honestly can’t see us mounting a decent enough score with the forward line we take into the early, critical rounds against very solid opposition.
Essentially we will be relying on an inconsistent (albeit improving) Peter Wright, an iffy defender come forward in Aaron Francis and possibly an untried kid recovering from 2 knee reconstructions in Kane Baldwin. On the small forward front we have Devon Smith who can barely kick over a jam tin and has yet to prove he can play the position to any great effect. Rounding off this diatribe of misery our best forward, Jake Stringer, has been carrying a groin injury which I am sure is worse than the club is letting on. No surprises here if he doesn’t even line up in Round 1.
Oh and did I mention a missing AMT?
We don’t possess goal kicking mids who can be relied upon to fill the void. Our mids will be lucky to break single digits in goals scored this season.
So sadly with Jonesy doing his ankle (probably an 8 week absence) I am afraid it’s Lid Back On for me.
If nothing else, this season will be about seeing if we have the forwards to be a Top 4 team as I believe we have the mids and defenders to claim that right. If we don’t see 30 plus goals from Francis, Wright and when fit, Jones then we must move heaven and earth to find one through Free Agency or elsewhere or run the risk of seeing an otherwise excellent squad go to waste.
