Ankle reconstruction sounds a bit scary but after a bit of Dr. Google help seems often limited to the tightening of the two ligaments down there. Explains his constant ankle rolls etc in past so its a good call for Harry this. All goes well he’ll be walking full weightbearing in a few weeks and physio for 3 months … ready for gentle pre season Aug-Sep.
Back calms down as hoped, ankle now stable, with a bit of luck he’ll get a run at full preseason … ready for 2024.
I don’t think 7 disposals, 3 marks and a goal a game is that bad for a first year player - especially a tall. Definitely something to build on and it’s only injuries and crap coaches that have stalled his development. If rumours are true then possible lack of professionalism as well, which means the ceiling is even higher if he gets that side of things right.
Carey only had an average of 8 disposals and 3 marks in his first season. Admittedly - he was a little younger.
Another club will grab him if we don’t offer a bit more than a year.
4 games over 10 disposals oh which 2 were against the hawks.
this is the problem with essendon people, you see the “flashy” stuff and ironically have short memories on the rest of the lack of output.
by the end of the year he will have essentially missed 3 whole seasons of football due to injury.
it is a dereliction of duty to offer him more than one year.
no doubt he will get 2 though, cos he is well a good lil essendon boy, and dodo makes sure to keep them around.
what’s the old saying, talent only gets you so far.
you could make an argument that everyone on the list has some talent, hell ham had enough talent to get drafted also.
as it stands however, people are wanting to yet again make list decisions based on feel and emotion, instead of what he’s actually done, and how injured he has been.
again he’s missed essentially 3 out of 4 possible seasons worth of games, and if he’s a bust you lot will have given him 6 years at best if you sign him to a 2 year deal, and will possibly stick around more based on you know “tall guys take time” and oh but the talent.
if he’s as talented as you all think, why aren’t you willing to back him in to get things right by next year, have a massively break out season and sign on from there ?
or if he has another poor year next year, put him on the rookie list after that on even smaller peanuts contract ?
No doubt he has talent and potential but they’re not just little blocks he’s been missing. Another year basically written off. If he doesn’t get some continuity soon it doesn’t bode well.
Ironically, it’s his seeming willingness to cover territory , chase, pressure and follow up at ground level that still has me thinking he can “make it” as much as anything. Not the flashy stuff.
But in playing style, he’s got to get injury free.
He’s got the same profile as someone like Gunstan, he just needs confidence in his body and hopefully, that will bring confidence in his ability. He seems like someone who struggles with self doubt just going off of body language and some interviews.
I’m frankly not interested in analysing every statistic from every conceivable game. I’m going with what I see, going off his natural talent and attributes.
His stats are in my opinion more a reflection of his lack of fitness, physical strength and lack of experience.
He’s yet to have a solid preseason. Hasn’t had anything like a full pre season. He hasn’t put significant amount of games together or had a season where he’s played most games. He hasn’t played much VFL even.
Mason Redman plodded along for many years, lurching from one injury to another. Injured, play a few, get re injured. For Mason he had about 5-6 years in this cycle.
Then last year, after having two injury free preseasons in a row, he blossomed. He came of age. He turned into one of our best 5 players. He’s on track to possibly be All Australian. Redman talked about his journey in a newspaper a while back. He talked about how important it was to get the fitness base. How important it was to get these preseasons to build his confidence and belief in his body.
Harry Jones will become a successful and valuable high marking, hard working and dynamic half forward. He can take a contested mark.
However, he needs the hours on the training track. He needs two injury free preseasons. And he needs to play footy every week.
X Recruuter Matt Rendell always says most big key position players blossom once they hit ~24yo. Harry Jones, if the club can get his body right will be a great example of this.
to perform to your potential in elite sport is impossible without a long extended high intensity training block
when offering the next contract, Harry will be judged favourably based on what he’s managed to do given shocking injuries and no extended high intensity training
the only proviso is that medically he must be expected to make a full recovery, and there’s no reason to think otherwise given the information we currently have
