This post from a Gisborne based WB supporter on Harry Jones’ player thread on Ess BF site -
“…It’s very likely Harry will fill out… His dad and uncles were all very good EDFL players that were lightly built teenagers that filled out over time… He should eventually be a good player for you.”
Good news that his heredity indicates that he will naturally fill out.
From memory… albeit hazy, possibly last round of the season Fletch held Ablett goalless for 3 quarters(which was unheard of in 93) until Fletch went off with a sprained ankle and Gaz kicked 3 in the last.
I’ve brought this up countless times and nobody wants to listen.
Not all key forwards are ‘one size fits all’. Our recruiters are stuck in the habit of trying to find the next Nick Riewoldt, rather than also seeking a Jack Riewoldt.
Nick Riewoldt was a key forward who gets up the ground provides an option before going outside forward 50, because of his endurance. He didn’t kick a lot of goal because spent most of his time roaming the wings. His leading patterns were up the flanks and the wings… and wasn’t your typical contested marking player.
Jack Riewoldt (was) the Key forward who stayed inside forward 50 and had goal kicking nous. He’d also had creative ways to kick goals. He did his best work inside 50.
You can’t have three Nick Riewoldts roaming around your forward line. You need key forwards with different strengths, which gives you more avenues to kick goals.
I’ve got no issues with Jones. He looks like he’s going to be a quality player, but we also need to get a stay at home forward that takes contested marks and has goal kicking nous… which is why we want Logan McDonald.
FWIW I am very strong about playing Harrison Jones as a wingman like Riewoldt and Richo did at the back end of their career until his body is up to being a key position player. His ability to mark and run as well as his speed and kicking nous makes him a very difficult matchup on the wing.
With his endurance numbers, I don’t think he will… he’ll be another player that gets on his bike up the wings also.
I’m looking at our list, the 2 players who are our stay at home Key forwards are Wright and Bryan (& Hooker I guess). What I’ve seen of Bryan, he’d be perfect for that role.
Yeah I think that’s why people really want Logan McDonald because he can do both. Leading up the wings but also taking contested grabs through superior bodywork or flying for it.
Would love if we somehow had a chance to go high-risk and pick Kaine Baldwin. Seems like a Jack Darling type. Doesn’t seem to be in the frame for any of our top 10 picks though. Being a SA kid I’m sure Crows will be targeting him with one of their late first/early 20’s pick.
One thing that we have missed, is having a Full Forward that has the strength to hold his ground while being double teamed, and still bring the ball to ground. Hooker was pretty decent with it.
Daniher preferred to sit behind the pack, and try a run & jump… which usually resulted in giving away a free kick, or get blocked from the contest.
Hopefully Wright can provide this, or at least learn how to provide that as our Full Forward.
Logan McDonald will be a big boy. He already has plenty of size in the thighs and hips.
Yeah and McKernan had a couple of years where he was very serviceable in that role bringing it to ground. Sadly we never did get to piece together potentially the best forward line in the league because of injuries.
Smith - Daniher - Walla
Raz - McKernan/Hooker - Stringer
What could have been had we never hired Justin Crowe…
