#23 Harrison Jones

Disagree that it was a fair observation. First time playing the role without practicing for it properly. The game itself didn’t lend to lots of tackles on the wing (as evidenced by the other wing and for the other team). It was a more intercept/outlet marking game and he did that reasonably well.

Great game from Harry I thought, nice seeing him roaming around, suits him

No doubt, it’s a positive game.
If he can get that marking going when he floats in front of players, without the congestion and pressure from key backs, it’s going to add to our intercept game.

Cox’s height valuable also.

Cox, Caddy and Harry are tall and athletic. Can run, kick and mark.

Once they get their bodies right they could become very difficult match ups.

hope lil rugrat watched the replay with you wearing an essendon beanie

Marking his impact without considering the 1 ruck / Caddy inclusion is very narrow.

From a team balance perspective, I much preferred Jones playing as a tall winger and having Caddy fwd than playing 2 rucks, Jones fwd and no Caddy.

The 1 ruck with Wright as No2 I think is a way better option.

Ill pay that

To be clear, I actually think he had a reasonable game. But if you compare his game to Cox’s that’s a pretty significant differential.

I think having all of Cox Jones and at times hepp running around zoning off a wing but not really hurting the opposition with ball in hand is not sustainable and something we have to look at. It’s very unfortunate that Saad got injured because he shapes as a player who can impact at both ends and in transition from a wing in the air and on the deck

It would be a tough call on yesterday’s game alone to drop any off those 3.

Caddy getting 5 shots at goal put the squeeze on Jones forward. As does the prospect of goldy returning (I don’t think he should unless it’s at the expense of 2mp).

I’d honestly be content this week if the only change was gresh for menzie and we moved hind cox hepp or Jones to sub

I was watching Jones very closely yesterday and noticed on at least 2 or 3 occasions that when he took a solid mark he wanted to move the ball quickly via hand, but each time the players running past to receive were covered. I liked that he showed intent. The unfortunate thing was the options weren’t open, but I’m glad he was smart enough not to give it straight to someone under huge pressure.

The other point relating to this was that by the time he wheeled around to kick most of the options up field were marked. Meaning it appeared he slowed down the general movement when it was due to lack of feee options.

I actually noticed a few occasions when various of our guys did the sideways chip. People around were moaning and wanting the dangerous kick, including when it would have been high-probability suicide.

Like the people who scream “kick the bloody thing” and then moan when the rushed hack gets intercepted…

I think Jones’ decision making with the ball is pretty good - definitely looks for first option, but not stupidly.

It was def a coaching mandate yesterday to move it quickly by hand from the wings

Cox had 9 touches and zero influence. He’d be lucky to not get dropped

I wasn’t paying attention, was he subbed as a tactical sub or did he go off injured?

Scott said they were about to take him off anyway, before the weird knee thing.

wont get dropped. some good pressure acts, 6 tackles, took some nice grabs.

Unless Cox or Guelfi have a setback based on what we saw late on, I’d think thats the only change needed. Might be Hind dropping to sub this week given we know how Brad loves Kelly in the lineup.

Time for Heppell to retire gracefully.

I reckon Jones fines if easier to take pack marks up on the wing as he’s far less likely to get bodied of the contest by his opponent.

Whereas in the forward line his opponent is much more likely to have the skill and strength to nudge him out of the contest with ease.

He’s a good bail out kick (something we severely lack) but a fish out of water around stoppage
