Some would suggest potty mouth(y)
If we get better, contend at the pointy end of the season trading in players for needs will become easy. There are always ruckmen looking to move for more opportunities. Darcy from Fremantle will be looking for a new club next year. Just one example.
Goldy will be the reason he turns into a decent ruck. Perfect mentor for Bryan.
Playing another season or two of mostly VFL wonât hurt him, in fact will build confidence and leadership.
And we all know Draper will get injured at some point and Goldy will need a rest, so everybody can cool their jets a little.
I think the rule change allowing the stiff arm in ruck contests has hampered Bryanâs ability to play a lot of seniors this year.
Heâs got a good leap and shown he can be a good tap ruckman but the stiffarm allows for the bigger, stronger ruckman to stiffle the leap and smaller built rucks like Bryan at this stage of his development. Thereâs a good article on the AFL going into this in detail.
Overall however I think it depends what Scott wants. If he wants to play a heavy hitting ruck to back up our smaller mids then Bryan isnât our guy right now. If we get some stronger mids in the middle and at the contest then I would cop the loss of the big ruck and back in Bryanâs work around the ground as an extra mid in the Grundy-role.
He may not take clunks forward, he may not be a beast (or he may develop this, heâs a baby still), but I still think he would be an excellent extra midfielder given some consistent opportunity to develop in the 1s.
If a club came for Bryan at the end of the year and offered a second rounder Iâd take it in a heart beat to try and package up our second rounder with it for the best speedy small forward available.
I feel like we could easily cover him with Vigo in the reserves and Draper Goldy and wright is more than enough for the afl.
If you look at Bryanâs numbers at AFL level, they are not too dissimilar to Max Gawnâs first 3 years. Now I am not saying he will become Max Gawn, but from Gawnâs 4th year onwards, he got plenty of gametime. Bryan is not being developed properly (Suprise surprise). Now is the time we should be ramping up his games, looking to see if he is capable of stepping up.
If this was the type of ruckmen you want, why not just use Cox in that role?
I remember Gawn taking a speccy in his first game against us.
There are plenty of players that donât get developed in the firsts because they are just not that good.
Thatâs true. He may not be good enough, but how will we know if we donât play him?
Heâs not rated by the coaches.
Thatâs obvious.
Otherwise we wouldnât have picked up a 35yo ruckman to play in the Seniors as a regular.
Itâs hard to see how he gets games.
Even harder if we revert to 1 Ruck when 2mp returns.
We watch him in the VFL against journeymen AFL rucks, see them beating him around the ground, and go âhmm, if Tom Campbell is doing this to him, odds are he isnât just going to look better against Max Gawnâ?
I do want to see Bryan get a go at AFL level, though.
I quoted this from the Draper thread back in May 2019.
He needs to add more around the ground watching on the weekend he wins a tap and then becomes a statue doesnât move
Iâve been saying this for ages.
Untill he can become useful around the ground Goldy will keep getting games.
Then your bang on my friend, I see big Vigo going past him at least he offers a forward aspect to hes game
That was his second year on an AFL list after being drafted as a rookie.
This is Bryanâs fifth year on an AFL list after being taken as a second round pick. Against a 4-5 year older Tom Campbell.
I donât think they are hugely comparable.
CH is so out of form as a poster.
How do we get him back in formâŚanyone ?
Tom Campbell is actually a very good ruckman. Thereâs a reason that he keeps finding a spot on AFL lists. I would put him in the same mould as Phillips.
Iâm the Tom Cambell of Blitz. Underrated as a poster, but often take down the big guns when given an opportunity.
And youâve been wrong for a good while. Bryan averaged almost 20 disposals per game in the VFL last year. At AFL level, it was only nine disposals per game, from 53% time on ground. For a bit of context, Draper is averaging 9.8 disposals per game this year from 73% time on ground and Goldstein 9 disposals per game from 72% time on ground. Based on those numbers Bryan gets more of the ball relative to time on ground than both Draper and Goldstein.
The few posters who persist in arguing that he isnât getting a game because he canât find the ball around the ground need to stop. It is not accurate.
Also, in response to the above conversation, when we played Sandringham in the VFL a couple of weeks ago: Tom Campbell - 24 hitouts, Nick Bryan - 40 hitouts.
