#27 Mason Redman - till end 2028

We currently don’t have two top 10 picks, as it stands we have pick 11. Next year who knows where we finish but I can’t see it being bottom four. You want pick 1, you need blue chip draft picks, look what north knocked back for pick 1 a couple of years ago. As for Wardlaw, considering he just signed an extension I don’t think he’s in a hurry to leave North

It’s complete fantasy to think we’re any chance of getting pick 1 off west coast

Wardlaw wanted out so badly he signed an extension.

Yea but he supported us as a kid, that means a lot around these parts

I never said WCE would take the deal; but, you have to play your best hand and give it a go, if you are to be successful. Otherwise; we just stick to our “we’ll be good” attitude and leave it to Dodoro to pick some more “gems”, whilst, we continue to be ignored by high end talent looking for a change.
What’s another 20 years…

Our best hand doesn’t get them to the table tho

generally speaking his poor games seem to coincide when playing decent opposition.
I don’t think he (or parish) handle pressure on them very well.
they are still in the mindset of worsfold and rutten thinking that they can do anything and everything they set their mind to, and instead of taking an easier option they continue to try and hit the hardest possible decision via a skillset they don’t necessarily have.

I thought his port game was poor, despite getting a lot of it.
his kick to petey in his return game v north was it sums it up for me. that great bit of play where he runs down the ground, and kicks it to wright, with an inch to spare with a north player falling back in front of him, and a north player just behind him.
great kick, but i’m sure he missed 2 free players inside 50.
so imo he’s actively looking to pick off the hardest possible outcome and trying to execute it all the time.
looks great when it comes off, as in the above example, but i can find just as many that haven’t worked were he just seems to think he can do it, just cos again he’s been told he’s a special lil boy who can do anything under worsfold and rutten.

I was more thinking we could end up with 3 first round picks - likely through free agency compensation - which has been talked about as what the Eagles did want a month or so ago for pick 1. Things may have moved now that Reid has continued to shine.

Why free agent Mason Redman is Adelaide’s No.1 recruiting target
After luring Jordan Dawson and Izak Rankine, free agent Mason Redman is the Crows’ No.1 recruiting target. Here’s why they are going all-in on the Essendon defender.

Will the Demons trade Grundy at the end of the season?
Adelaide has had a strategy when it comes to the off-season over the past couple of years.

When it comes to recruitment, the Crows have been consistent.

The list of players they target is extremely small, with a big emphasis on team needs and how the potential player could fit into their game style.

In 2021 they were able to lure Jordan Dawson back to South Australia, last year they went all out at Izak Rankine.

Dawson has become the club’s captain and the big-bodied midfielder they have been crying out for, while Rankine has helped the Crows establish one of the most potent forward lines in the competition.

Now the Crows’ recruitment this year is very much centred around one man, Essendon defender Mason Redman.

Will the Crows go three in a row when it comes to snaring their big target in the off-season, why do they want him and where would he fit in at West Lakes?

CURRENT STATE OF PLAY

It’s almost been an open secret that the Crows are interested in the 25-year-old from Millicent in the state’s southeast.

The Crows have offered a long-term contract to the Bombers’ free agent, although it is understood that it is not a six-year deal that was reported last week.

Redman finished fourth in the Bombers’ best-and-fairest last year, and Essendon is pulling out all the stops to try and keep him in Melbourne.

The Bombers have also lodged a contract offer for Redman and he was handed a comprehensive pitch from Essendon about its future direction that involved rucking great Simon Madden, a club legend who also wore the No.27 jumper.

But Redman is yet to make a decision on his future, and the Crows will still have hope they can bring him to West Lakes.

Sadly, it seems Redman will leave. I just hope the compensation for us is high enough. Massimo or Cox could fill the gap, or even Montgomerie the way he’s playing. We also have a developing Hayes who will be worth waiting for.

I’ll be sad to see him leave, he’s a big loss but we can’t have players stay who don’t want to be here.
Maybe Wanganeen could play as a half back? I reckon Durham could too. I don’t want him to leave but it’s not the end of the world. Clubs have lost better players than Mason and survived and actually prospered. We can too.

Redman is a 600k player at best. Goes missing when we play good teams in good form.

I don’t particularly get any dread from the article at all?
We have offered him a contract
The 6 year deal believed to be on the table from Adelaide was false
The “go home factor” has been put to bed by Redman himself
Sit back and wait. His relationship with Scott is great. A loss v Geelong won’t be the final straw as this group knows there is plenty of work to be done.

I’m quite sure without player agents both Parish and Redman would be signed up. This is just about maximising contract duration and cash. The same as every other player in the league at contract time.

If he goes as a FA, effectively, we would lose him for nothing, if we recruit McKay or any other highly regarded FA.

Don’t think we’ll lose him, but in worst case we release ridley to play the role of intercept HBF and find a 3rd tall out of cox, reid, baldwin or trade.

Given we have options we need to be sensible re the counter offer.

It’s not worth burning any more mental energy over it. I like him and hope he stays. If it was up to me I’d put the $700K a season for 5 years on the table. If he doesn’t sign then yeah, look at next steps (not match and bank the FA compo or match and force a trade) and obviously earmark a replacement, whether that’s at the club currently, at another AFL a club that we can bring in, or via draft.

The reality is, all clubs lose players each year, we are no different.
I don’t want him to leave, but if he does, what can you do?
We’ve recovered ok from players much better than Redman leaving in the past, and we will recover again if that happens.

It’s hard to say we’ve recovered from better players leaving when we haven’t been a competitive team in 20 years.

Well we aren’t collecting wooden spoons are we?

I dont want him to leave but if he does and we are seriously looking at bringing in Mackay then we better force a trade. I’ll be ropeable if we essentially swap Redman for Mackay.

Waiting game on Bomber

The two clubs in the race for star Essendon defender Mason Redman are still waiting for him to make a call, but football industry sources expect him to remain in the red and black.

It was widely reported that Adelaide made a long-term offer to Redman via his agent, Ben Williams, but sources familiar with the situation told Money Talks this was not the case. The Age has confirmed that Redman has an offer from the Bombers.

This masthead previously reported the Crows’ interest in the 25-year-old restricted free agent but that they were not super aggressive in their pursuit.

Redman would be an excellent addition to Adelaide’s list, after they traded for Izak Rankine and Jordan Dawson in the past two years, but they are well served behind the ball with medium-sized emerging talents Max Michalanney, Wayne Milera and Mitch Hinge.
