His decline the last 12 months is one of the great mysteries of Essendon’s last year. He isn’t the same player, and doesn’t look happy to me. Something, I don’t know what, is going on.
Put him on the trade table. Absolute liability for a good 12 months now
He was terrible last year too.
So easy to say on a forum isn’t it
Feel better now
He has had a shocker…been very disappointing
Post contract signing he’s been a shadow of himself. He said he probably wouldn’t have stayed if not for Scott. It’s not a great look that as soon as he locked in the bag, his form has never recovered.
This. He looks to me like a guy who really isn’t enjoying his footy.
But also, there’s so much reactionary bullshit going on in these player threads at the moment. He hasn’t been at his best this season and he was no good against the Saints, but he was clearly one of our better players in the three games before that. And people saying he was rubbish last year; he finished third in the b&f and made the All-Australian squad. I do concede that for a player of his ability and experience he plays too many poor games, and that’s definitely something that needs to be addressed.
He’s an attacking half-back, it’s just not reasonable to expect him to get 25 touches per game, never waste a kick AND completely negate his opponent. The Martin move has hurt him, he doesn’t look happy and what’s happening up the field with the absolutely pisspoor pressure is really hurting our defenders. All of them.
The only thing this guy offers that makes anyone think he’s any good is that little cheapie handball from the guy outside 50 that lets him get a goal. He offers nothing else and regularly gifts a goal to the opposition like that unforgivable pathetic blind effort on Saturday night. Those ■■■■■■■ devil ears celebrations should be canned. Take that photo off the membership section on the website Essendon.
Looks like a guy that got a bit cool for school after everyone fussed over him durung contract signing. Lost his hunger, intent, seems happy to just roll the arm over, just like the rest of them. If theres some other issue re got the sooks, then dont play and request a trade. Hes not on his own
He’s out of form and as mentioned by many, Martins move back has changed his game. He provided some grit and run off half back when at top form. More than likely he’s being asked to play of a more lockdown role which is completely different to his natural game and doesn’t allow him to play with the flair he would like.
Kelly is lockdown, McGrath is playing more lockdown, Heppell is providing literally zip. Martin is playing great footy and excels when up field between the wing and half forward.
We don’t have any pace or run coming out of the backline either. I believe Mason has a spot but we need to get the mix right and he’ll return to his best footy. Like our forward line, the backline is not setup correctly and probably needs some additions that bring pace and accountability as we are far to one paced with McKay, Laverde and Ridley all the same pace, just like Mason, Kelly, McGrath and Martin. Hepps is glacially slow.
Redders will come back, can’t wait till it all gets sorted.
I see our best backline as:
McGrath - McKay - New addition with pace lockdown
Redman Ridley - new addition with pace attacking
Martin upfield
Laverde, Kelly depth
Hepps delisted.
Either he’s constantly injured or he has the most farked up running gait ever. It’s odd.
This bloke is a pretender.
Has gone to ground again in the second half of the season after talking tough all of the offseason about how sick and tired he was of our fade outs. He’s a huge part of the problem and another we are stuck with.
I have to disagree with this. I don’t know the guy personally, but I’ve seen the way he interacts with fans and other non-players and he doesn’t seem to have his head up his own arse at all.
I really rate Redman as a player. He’s a damaging kick, has a good turn of speed, marks strongly for his size and (usually) plays with some aggression. He was our best player in 2022, in my opinion, and was 3rd in the b&f and made the AA squad last year. He can really play, he’s got the potential to be an A grader.
But as I and others have said, he doesn’t look happy this year. Redman is on record as saying that Brad Scott was a major reason he re-signed. Do you think the conversations between the pair included Scott telling Redman that “yep, we love you and we want you to re-sign, but next year we’re gonna put Nic Martin in your role and use you in another way that doesn’t actually make full use of your capabilities”. I don’t think so.
Scott now has a proven history of saying one thing and doing another (no sugar hits, not playing injured players etc). Imagine if your boss promised you something and then moved the goalposts after you’d signed on. Redman doesn’t look happy (and is playing like it), and if this is the reason, I don’t blame him.
I don’t agree with this notion he’s annoyed at Martins role. Way overthinking the scenario. Redman is still getting up the field and putting shots on goal at times
If anything think he’s probably got some niggle
But some of his ball use/decision making been horrific. Not alone there though.
He’s been poor for the majority of the year. I don’t think it’s an injury or niggle
He doesn’t seem to have the desperation anymore to defend properly
Yeah i guess all fair comment, just seems to me like not invested like he was, and if thats because Martin playing "his role ", then he kinda does have his head up his own arse a bit as he , as they all should be, putting team first and cracking in regardless of if playing favourite spot. Selflessness goes further than saying hi to kids at training. If hes carrying an injury, different story.
If he’d been told in advance about the Martin thing and was being petulant about it, then fine, he deserves criticism. But if he’d signed up on the proviso that he was going to be playing a certain role and was then told after re-signing the plan had changed, he’s entitled to be ■■■■■■ off.
I also suspect he’s carrying some sort of injury, but I’m not convinced that’s the major issue.
We pooed our pants because SA was sniffing. He’s had one genuinely good season.
If Red is carrying a niggle which is affecting his ability to give effort then he shouldn’t be playing, pretty simple. All players have something but at some point the coaches have to say, you can’t perform at X level so sit it out
He can be as ■■■■■■ off as he wants, he still should be giving his all on the field. Hes a professional, apparently
