Davey kicked as many goals as Menzie, but also laid a great tackle to cause a turnover and forward entry.
Just needs to be a bit more instinctive, like a typical goal hungry small forward. Seems to overthink maybe looking for a team option.
Jamie Elliot didn’t have a much better day imo.
Its a fair question. Certainly a lot cleaner in pre season but he isn’t always handling the pressure of AFL footy as yet. Still think there is a player there
Totally agree, I’ve seen the skills he has at training and pre-season. I sense he doesn’t feel comfortable at the level yet and it may take a year or two before he does. Worth persisting with. A few games in the VFL to get confidence high again wouldn’t hurt either
Feel like he needs a game where gets two cheap goals then the confidence will click and build from there.
That goal yesterday was clutch
And Menzie roved a pack for a direct goal assist.
All 3 small forwards struggled on the day. All did some ok things and some bad things. Davey and Menzie are both young, and I’m happy that they got the experience of the day. I hope the loss burns them both.
To be fair you can forget the “same stage” part he had more impact than snelling yesterday
Haha I could almost reached out and grabbed the umpire though
Why, they didn’t even give me 1 game!
For everyone punching down on this guy,
Phillips had 4 possessions
Davey had 6 possessions, 1 goal
Durham had 9 possies on the wing
Stringer had 11 possies and 1 goal
Menzie 12 possessions and 4 shots on goal for 1.2 and an ootf
He wasn’t our worst on the day. He just needs to get used to the pace and pressure and be cleaner
Yeah I think people are being quite harsh on Menzie. I’m not sold on him but he deserves another chance. He had a few opportunities. If he converted them we’d be singing a much different tune
This thread is a microcosm of the roller coaster that is playing the kids. Sometimes they’re good, sometimes they’re not.
he did have a dirty day slipping over all the time but yeah, there were worse. I guess at least menzie put him in a position to have shots on goal
phillips had an absolute stinker and a half, davey offered 2/5ths of bugger all and durham had a real dirty day, exemplified by his refusal to punch that long kick through for a point, and instead spill a mark and allow daicos to dribble it home
Yep. I find it ironic that Menzie appears to be getting more vitriol because he got into dangerous positions and then failed to capitalise/beat his man. Whereas a few players who were passengers (e.g. Durham, Davey) are getting far less focus.
It was a huge, hostile crowd. It was against a top team with pressure. And yet some Blitzers want every player to be perfect. Even those with 1-2 years in the system, undeveloped bodies, and who are still learning things.
Menzie may not make it. But he did a lot of things right against the Magpies, and maybe some Blitzers should notice those things than just laying the boot in because they have anger management issues.
He needs to learn to convert under AFL level pressure with AFL level time to execute
So that would be pretty typical returns for a 2nd year small forward, wouldn’t it? Especially one with only a single preseason under his belt.
For the year, he’s averaging 10.5 disposals, 1.0 goals and 2.2 tackles. Playing in the same game yesterday:
- Perkins averaged 12 disposals and 0.9 goals last year (his second).
- Bobby Hill averaged 9 disposals and 0.8 goals in his second year.
- Jamie Elliott in his second senior year (first in AFL so similar circumstances) averaged 10.3 disposals and 0.4 goals.
- WHE initially played as a forward and in his second year averaged 12 disposals and 0.3 goals.
So, he’s actually performing around about where someone would expect.
A nice demonstration of the deceptiveness of averages then. Like I said he had a bright start to the year, and now he is having a lean run, that’s form, it fluctuates, and its a bit bizarre to imply that just because its typical for a second year small forward to have these numbers (is it? you’ve given four fairly random examples) he shouldn’t have his position questioned. You know what else is fairly typical of a second year player - being dropped to the reserves
Could have been completely unsighted like Stringer I guess …
I’ve read in a few different threads people having a crack at Snelling. I didn’t mind his game. I like the pressure he brings, you know when he go’s to tackle it’s going to stick. In a game like yesterday a broken tackle is all it takes to get out the back.
Well I thought Jye did very well overall. And like a few here noted already he never backed off and kept looking to get involved. Seem to recall him tracking right back to our FB line at one point earlier in the game. And Jesus H, he could’ve nearly won the game for us.
He was nervous and for an 8 game veteran, who wouldn’t have been. Under the microscope in front of a raucous 95,000+ crowd watching every step, effort or mistake no matter how small …
I’ve no doubt under BDB he’ll be a very handy player for us going forward. You can sense he’s truly got the hunger to want to succeed and learn. So I look forward to seeing him line up against KKK in the return bout later this season and see how he goes with this Anzac Day now under his belt.
