Could people stop mentioning anything about an injury free run with him please, you are tempting fate.
He really is a calming figure down in our back 50 now, for such a big guy he always seems to find time in a ground ball situation to make the right decision. Couldn’t be happier for him.
Also the posters that potted him I’m sure it was directly after that Crows loss, we can all say some rubbish ■■■■ when emotions are high, so let’s not go to hard on them.
I don’t agree. Rids seems to be blamed for every other defenders struggles- Reid, McKay, Zerk-thatcher… these guys can work it it out. Sometimes a defender needs to play lock down defender on a dangerous forward, other times they play intercept defender, other times rebounding. McGrath, rids , Reid and Redman need to accept at times they will have to play different roles as a defender and play them well. The great sides have this.
Not saying they shouldn’t have to own it but emotions run high after a loss like the Crows inflicted on us.
Just because players are young doesn’t mean people can’t be critical of their abilities to play football. Some are just more constructive than others I suppose.
Grown adults don’t get to blame their emotions running high because their football team lost to write off young players making their way. If that’s the justification, then seriously, they need to grow up.
I reckon there’s a combination of things. The talk was that McKay would be the primary tall defender and release Ridley to play as a third up interceptor. In reality, I think McKay gains confidence from having another key tall like Reid who can blanket the the oppositions best and take some of the spotlight and pressure off him. I also think McKay was massively underdone coming into the season and its no surprise that improved fitness and confidence in his body is leading to improved performances.
I’ve felt Ridley has been a bit disappointing in games so far this year.
I reckon he would be flat about his year too. Hasn’t been very good.
McKay has excellent judgement and craft. He’s got two big knocks.
His decision making by hand is a touch slow.
He doesn’t take strong contested marks.
That’s not going to really change. He is what he is. Takes a lot of good intercept marks, plays off his man well.
I do think the talent is there in our backline. We have held teams except for Adelaide to fairly low scores.
Developing upfield defensive pressure in our younger players will help stifle ball movement and give the backs more time to develop better system I think.
