Of those scores I think he kicked 1.1 on Reid. There was the mark deep on the goal line otherwise his scores iirc were from a downfield free kick, one hander on Jones, then two shots from broken play. I’d need to rewatch some of it.
Morris only took 4 marks and I thought Reid was okay given they had almost 70 inside 50s.
I know you have a hate boner for Reid but he is one of the very few shining lights from a grim year (just getting through the year to date - touch wood). He is being asked to lead the most dysfunctional and under siege backline in footy and his senior compatriots are either injured / looking to leave (Ridley) or gone completely AWOL (McKay).
Look forward to him forming a partnership with Hayes next year.
I haven’t seen anything from Reid to suggest he could be that player. He’s tracking at one intercept mark a game. Someone like Harry Dean, who is a first year player, averages 5. The best around 7–8. Don’t think Reid has the aggressive mindset to be that player unfortunately.
Nobody doubts he has some talent how much of the talent he has is debatable. I question his intensity and the way he goes at a contest. I’ve watched him closely this year and he constantly seems off his man, doesn’t lunge or seem desperate to spoil. He’s often caught ball watching or in the North game he had his back to the ball at crucial points and was well beaten several times.
If he’s out most promising KPD we are in strife. For a guy that can mark who is supposed to be able to read thee play and can soil and intercept - he’s actually failing on those fronts badly. He had 1 mark and 8 possessions yesterday and the Lions entered their F50 70 times. 1 mark and 8 possessions !!!
Honestly, it would be on brand for us to trade him for pick #30, not replace him because we have McKay and a guy who’s barely played, and draft a hybrid mid-back flanker, while we watch him pour champagne on his teammates.
Of course we’re not trading him. My point is don’t plan on him being a good KPD for us because we need better if we are going to get out of this mess we are in. I bet we could find 5-10 blokes in VFL or equivalent interstate that could be as good as him. The problem is we over rate him (Dodo syndrome) and keep thinking he will be a star. Besides his questionable fitness /injury history I’m not seeing anything that suggests he has the hunger or skill set to hold down a KPD post longer term. He’s easily beaten and seems too light and timid. We need better.
I think it’s a bit the same with Farrow, where people just write off players because they don’t have hectic intensity but ignore the more positive parts of their game in doing so. Not every player plays in the manner you may want them to, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have value or capability
I have definitely noticed a bit of whipping boy status creeping in on Reid from a couple of posters.
