#31 Zach Reid

FFS!

Realistically he was a long shot to play many games in his first year since so skinny as a kpp. .

It should really have just been a year he was building his body up mostly.

Jones in his first year who had his injury woes didn’t play at all. Maybe some late season scratch matches only. Got his body right. Had a big preseason and has been better for it in year 2.

This is the Gumbleton moment. 2 out of 3 aren’t bad for Dodo.

Dammit I’m gutted for him. So many set backs in his first AFL year.

Bad news indeed, hope he recovers well.

Young Essendon defender Zach Reid will likely be sidelined for the rest of the season, after scans revealed he had sustained a stress fracture in his lower back.

General manager of football Josh Mahoney said the club would take a conservative approach with the 19-year-old’s recovery.

“While disappointing for Zach and the club, these types of injuries are reasonably common for tall, young players of Zach’s build early in their careers,” Mahoney said.

“We’re being conservative in our approach to Zach’s rehabilitation and will likely rule him out for the remainder of the season. This is the best decision to ensure his longevity in what we know will be a long career with Essendon.

“As part of his individual program, we will support and build up Zach over the off-season and prepare him to complete a full pre-season leading into his second year."

Get him right, at the same time, fix up Jye Caldwells hammies as well.

This continues the approach of Murphy talking about GPS numbers and a token injury in the club videos and Mahoney being trotted out as the grim reaper whenever there is a proper injury

Well I don’t think any club “brags” about injuries. There is a time to release the info, the extent of it, if known, its not an exact science. But yes I am sure its frustrating for everyone.

Touchwood this kid doesn’t go down the same path as Winderlich and Gumbleton.

Those lower back injuries are never good.

Big H had them in his first year also

We should just get the sticky tape out like the Aussie cricket team did with his uncle Bruce Reid.

Generally Stress Fractures in the lower back aren’t too alarming. AFL players and fast bowlers regularly overcome them and return at full strength.

Remember the panic when Reid got glandular fever? Blitz automatically went Waterman worst case senario. Comparing Reid’s injury to Gumby’s career ending back/hammy issues is the same.

*p.s. may not be a medical expert, so who knows!

He can be added to the non active list.

Reid will be fine. As mentioned, this type of injury is common with younger talls whilst their bodies are developing.

Get him right for the first day of pre-season, and just have him smash the weights all summer

I’m no expert but could too much physical activity be the reason for the stress fracture?

Probably don’t want it to happen again coz he was smashing weights in the gym

Need to fix his bowling action!

It is amazing how often that so many of Essendon’s young draftees miss nearly all their first year through injury.

Cox and Perkins are the rare exceptions.
