#39 - Vigo Visentini

Love the effort Goldy puts in but I reckon soon it will be play Q1 and Q2, take a nap Q3, play Q4

Are other clubs supporters as fixated on ā€˜being ready’ as our fan base seems to be?

Fine, I am just saying we need a mature mid season draftee to future proof us. Six months or be it 12/18 months is. fine. No issue re Vigo …

Other than he is not ready

At this early point in his career is Vigo a better Ruck or Forward ?

I like what he doing in the ruck ATM but I’ve also seen him looking really dangerous when he played forward last year.

I think him playing forward was a by-product of Bryan playing the majority of last season in the VFL and doing the bulk of the ruckwork. The unfortunate situation with the injuries to Draper and Bryan, and the subsequent need for Goldy to step up and play senior footy, has meant Vigo has had to shoulder the VFL ruck duties. That’s great for his development. I hope he’s in a position to get a game or two where the need arises and Goldy has to have a spell, especially given we have another 3 5-day breaks potentially between now and the end of the season.

Josh Fraser went pick 1, like Kreuzer and was thrown into the ruck early for the Pies. possibly to his detriment.

Which is why I think he will end up the better of the three.
That ability to go forward and be dangerous is massive

I’m also pretty sure Malthouse once referred to him as a forward flanker trapped in a ruck man’s body lol

Ruck.
He had a couple of really good games forward last year, but also alot of quiet ones. Since taking over the primary ruck duties he’s been fantastic.
He didn’t play forward at U18 level, so his form there last year was a bit of a happy surprise.

I feel like a broken record at this point, but he and Gerreyn could be a phenomenal combo. Very early still of course but I’m lid off.

Goldstein still on the list ā€œcoachingā€

And just for reference.

Age at debut

Gawn 19.5
Sean Darcy 19
Xerri 22
Marshall 21
Grundy 19
T De Koning 19
English 19
Jackson 18
Witts 19

I think there’s strong evidence that debuting a ruck at 19 is not outside the realms of possibility.

Definitely don’t see any issues with him rucking with Goldy or Wright. One out against Gawn would be asking for trouble, but on a matchup basis or in combo with a more experienced guy would be fine. (And that doesn’t mean we don’t take a MSD ruck as well )

Simon was playing forward pocket really.

At the beginning in his first season, yep he was a goal kicker and scored 18 goals 8 behinds in his first six games, before he was 17. Next season before the end of the year and before he was 18 he was playing ruck, along side of Graham Moss.

Reckon if he stayed as a pure forward he may have kicked 100. 575 career goals, he was a champ.

Nice research Frosty,

And he may get opportunity that way.

However almost all those picks were high draft picks, not #8 2023 rookie elevation. Balance that list out.

Just sayin’, Vigo cannot carry the back end of the season with Goldie.

We should go for maturte mid draft./

nick bryan was 19 or 20

I think we should definitely take a MSD ruck. But I also don’t think k we need to hold back Visentini

I don’t have the time to look at the rookie draft rucks beyond Draper was 20 when he did his ACL and was 21 when he debuted, and
Dean Cox was 19 when he debuted.

I know there have been a heap of rookie ruck successes over the years, I just can’t remember who’s who right now.

That said where they were drafted doesn’t affect their ability to be ready, just the potential for them to be given opportunity earlier. But in each case the club giving players opportunity earlier has also made the decision that they didn’t think there was potential harm in debuting these rucks at that age.
