#40 - Zak Johnson

Fair, but maybe just maybe being able to kick should be a baseline skill for an AFL player.
I’m not asking for magic, just a drop punt that hits a target

I’m not sure what you’re inferring here, because that’s not what I was originally talking about.

I’m saying that we need one or two ELITE kicks of the footy in the back half to counter high press zones like the one we faced last night. I think Brad understands this, hence experimenting with Nic Martin in defence last year and at times this year, and Zach Merrett over the last couple of weeks.

If you want to re litigate the Tsatas selection there’s an entire thread for that.

I was taking the ■■■■ about Tsatas last night.

Maybe you can talk about Tsatas in the Tsatas thread. It has nothing to do with discussion on elite kicks coming out of D50 to deal with high zone presses.

All good noob, just having a laugh. Agree with your point though, we seriously lack quality ball users down back. We could clone Merrett and still need one more.

I think Zak Johnson will be one if we stick with him as a defender. I’m advocating that we go after Josh Lindsay in the upcoming draft to add another.

Johnson’s showing promise and looks composed with ball in hand.

Just don’t let Dodoro back near the draft table unless the young fella Lindsay already got a running bounce highlight reel

Being able to hit those 45 kicks into the corridor is also a different type of skillset than some of those guys that we consider as generically good kicks. Like your Kane Farrell that can roost a ball 60 meters ala Dave Meyers. Josh Lindsay can roost a ball, but he can also do these lovely little creative touch kicks inside the corridor where he changes angles and drops a ball into a pocket of space for a player to run onto.

Anyway I’ve rambled enough here.

I don’t see this. Is he really going to be able to properly defend long term?

Who knows? I’ve mentioned that he’s strong in the air for a guy his size… but I do still have some concerns about his lack of intensity to close and tackle.

But then guys like Ash and Bailey Dale aren’t exactly defensive dynamos.

Never mattered a jot to Dodoro

After three games he is avg top 4 in rebound 50, bounces and metres gained at Essendon. 5th in disposal eff.

damnation of the senior players.

I’m not particularly interested in defending a lot of our senior players, but Johnson is 4th for rebound 50s behind McGrath, Redman, and Prior (just barely in front of fellow newbie Roberts, and Ridley would be in front if he hadn’t been subbed out injured by half time in two of his six games).

It’s good that he’s doing well in the stats relevant to his position, but it’s hardly damning that a half back is getting more rebound 50s than everyone except the other half backs.

This kid looks really good. Already looks like one of the better kicks in our team.

Lindsay sounds like a no brainer for us, is that who’d you go for Noob?

Johnson a good chance for rising star this week. Lots of eligible players in the WC Blues game though but as of right now you’d say it’s his from all other completed games (no one in Port/Dees worth mentioning)

Depends on where we land pick wise, but I certainly think he’s a type that we’re desperate for more of.

Would be 4th for the year so far which is very very promising, hopefully Kako tears apart a game, 3 or 4 goals and a number of touches should do it for a small fwd

Agree, if we get enough players with elite kicking skills our improvement trajectory can shift drastically.
