#40 - Zak Johnson

Disagree. Shiel has proven that he is no good.

Shiel needs a few games in his half back role first, but could be managed as sub throughout the year.

My issue with him as sub last year was it was off playing vfl and coming back from injury so hard for him to get up to speed, make an impact and didn’t fully trust his body.

Would be different from a 7 game stretch then a week as sub.

AS one of our teachers used to contemptuously call them…the school that calls itself after a street.

Good reel

He’s proved he’s no good at seeing into the midfield as a sub. He could have an impact at half just using his pace potentially. I’m not opposed to trying it, especially if it buys more minutes for seh or Rogers or Johnson at half back

Shiel just turned 32 actually. He’s a total pro, so could easily see Shiel playing a few more years if he can stay healthy. But given his injury history, I am not certain that will happen

He’s kinda like Durham whereby he just moves like a footballer with a lot of potential. The perfect body shape for a mid.

It won’t be at Essendon.

Disagree. He’s proven he’s not as good as Blitzers want, and has some limitations. Played plenty of good football with us and GWS.

Shiel just wasn’t the right fit for us. His flaws just got magnified in our midfield.

Or horrible management of injuries has probably not done him much help either

Yes, I agree. Think he has been good for periods. Was actually having a bit of a laugh with the statement prior. Poor humour. My preference is we move past him, but deserves his opportunity.

How did Zak go on the weekend? Looks like he was able to find a bit of the ball, just looking at the stats. I was unable to tune in for the game.

Looked tired in the last and missed a few targets by foot but kept trying to take the game on. Haven’t watched the rest yet.

Wasn’t the best on the ground but very serviceable and there is a player there for sure.
I’d love for him to come into the side but he needs to get the fitness up

He was okay without starring. Played as the 7th defender distributing the ball. He moves well and his ball use a clear standard.

Had a few defensive lapses and he dropped a 15m chest pass in his defensive goal square but it was a pass mark overall.

If you recall the few games Massimo played for us under Rutten - particularly the game where he won the rising star nomination - that’s sort of how/where Johnson is playing.

ANNOUNCE

Would like to see him spend more time in the middle at vfl level but it’s been a slow burn preseason for him

He’s definitely got something going for him. Seems to have an innate feel for who and where players are around him, and is calculating his move ahead of time. Didn’t hit every target but quite a lot to like already. And one of the youngest players taken in that draft.

Agreed. Might be physically too much at this stage for big midfield minutes, but he’ll get a few chances at some point.

I’ve got no doubt he will end up a player.
Seeing his best mates in caddy and Kako playing must give him great motivation and belief
